Should I buy these Infinity Qb speakers?

Hey All,

Not looking for a dollars and sense answer (don’t need to know if this is a “good” deal) rather, I would just like to know if I should bother with these at all.

Guy has a pair of Infinity Qb for $100. States that one of the dust caps on the woofer is torn and one of the mids dust caps is pushed in.

Of course, he give the old “doesn’t affect sound one bit and it’s purely cosmetic” argument. Is he right? Would these speakers perform up to par (aside from potentially needing a recap)?

Advice appreciated.

Dust cap dents in general won't affect the sound, but any tears should be repaired, as it will affect the integrity of the overall enclosure, and torn woofer caps will rattle at higher volumes. But it's a pretty simple fix, they can be glued back, or replaced in extreme cases. I'd go ahead with the purchase, while they were considered "entry-level" by Infinity at the time, they'll compare favorable with most other speakers of that era. The big disadvantage of the Qx range is the awful vinyl veneer and the particle board cabinet that easily absorbs any water, causing it to swell. Keep them dry!

Yes the dust caps on those phillips mids usually come right out with tape of toliet paper roll and.... well you can minds eye it.

Dust cap on woofer cheap/doable.

JUST MAKE SURE BOTH EMITS ARE WORKING

Just bought them. Both emits seem to be working great. The dust cap is torn badly so a replacement will be in order. Speakers are in decent to good condition but not mint be any stretch. I’ll post pics later when I get home with them. Going to pair them with a Kenwood KA9100
 
Even if the EMIT tweeters are not working, $100 is cheap. Replacements can be sourced, and sometimes a minor repair is all they need. Beware - the cabinets on these are not great, and easily damaged. I've owned a pair since 1978. Very "musical" speaker in my opinion. Do they come with the bent metal stands? Do a search in the Infinity forum for info on Qb's. I have a thread in there on updating my pair, and there are a few others that are very informative.
 
Infinity Qb's are my favorite all time speaker. Not entry level. That would have been the Qe, followed by the Qa, both two-ways, then the Qb.
They will need a good amount of power to sound their best. I liked to run mine with a Kenwood KA-7100 integrated; the KA-9100 is a great match.
Do whatever you need to do to them. If you're ambitious, you can "stereo pair" them.
They are absolute keepers

Great news on the emits congrats!
LMK if you need any mids. I think I have 4 of those Phillips lying around somehwere.

Here they are. I wiped them down but still a little dusty. Gotta say, with their grills on these are downright ugly to my eye. But if they sound great then...

You can see the ripped dust cap. Need to replace that. Otherwise, they seem to be in solid shape.
 
Anyone know if I need a specific dust cap for these? I found some with the infinity logo on them but prefer original or as close to as possible.
 
There have been several threads on AK from people who have done major restorations and enhancements to these. A search will get you gobs of info.

Stick with paper if you can. You'll want something that's as close in mass to the original as possible. If it's a little lighter that's not a problem, you can add some weight if you need to, but if it's heaver it will change the parameters of the woofer.

I will, indeed, be digging in by searching here. A preliminary search, however, yielded more “how to” than sourcing an appropriate dust cap.

With that said, I’ll be looking and reading more carefully over the holiday.

Unfortunately, I’ve caught the speaker bug. I’m currently very happy with my KLH Model 5 (recapped and resealed) but am already itching to try Dynaco a25, Wharfedale W60, Marantz Imperial 6 (I had a pair and FOOLISHLY sold them. Want them back badly), and KLH 6...to name a few.

I got home this afternoon and had brought one of the Qb speakers into the house. Went back to the garage and my wife had just arrived back home and was staring into the trunk. She then looked at me and said “what’s this?”.

I looked like one of those guilty dogs you see online.
 
The OEM dust caps are fairly unique with the blunt end of the dust cap.
How much that influences the sound I do not know.
I do know those woofers show up quite often on ebay.

I saw one on eBay already. They look like they may be cheap enough to simply replace the whole woofer.
