Should I do it?

kaplang

Works for me !
Just looking for some AK opinions, that I highly respect.

Should I sell my Thorens TD124 with a SME 3009 series II tone arm minus the headshell and cartridge for a TD224 i have been longing for. The 124 needs nothing and I think I could sell it for close to what a 224 would cost in good condition or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks

I had never seen this model before. It was introduced in 1962. Anyone know how long it lasted ? Very Rube Goldberg;

I have a strong liking for changers, Now all but one of the 6 or 8 tables at my disposal are changers and the one's that not a changer, is fully automatic. I love watching them operate, that is a big part of the record playing experience for me. Guess it reminds me of my childhood in the 1950's. My "growth" took me into fully manual's in the 1970's but 10 or so years ago, gravitated away from them. Guess I came full circle.

Even though I have no particular interest in Thorens, I observed a TDW-224 during it's restoration process then once complete, watch it operate. Getting all functions working was not without it's tribulations.

It was interesting but the mechanics were too "different" even for me and the surface area needed for operation would not be compatible with my living space. But they are uncommon and put on a good show. It reminded me very much of the 78 jukeboxes I remember seeing when I was a kid.

I suppose if I had funds and space, I'd probably have bought it more as a curiosity than anything else and being a working example would have been a bonus.

That was about a year ago and to the best of my knowledge, it's still available. But I don't know at what price. Maybe the shop's owner is not actively trying to sell it as I've seen it incorporated in the store's system from time to time.

Thanks for everyone's input. I've decided to keep the TD124 and I just sold my Mcintosh MX110. I know! shouldn't have done that but I haven't really used it in a couple of years and didn't plan on it. I sold it for close to what I will be paying for what appears to be a nice TD224 I found on Craigslist that is coming with an additional Thorens head shell for the TD224 and a new idler wheel. I did what I think is my due diligence to assure that I am not getting scammed. Seller has had a perfect 100% positive feedback rating on eBay since 1999 and Paypal told me it I pay using goods and services they will back me up if I have a problem as long as seller and buyer follow their rules. I also did a search on AK for the seller to see if anything negative showed up and nothing did so I fell pretty confident it will work out. I know its not a perfect world but I'm still confident.

The seller claims he has shipped over 50 turntables since he started selling on eBay 1999 so I'm confident he knows how to pack properly. I read several of his feedback's on Ebay several that were for TTs and hes getting rave reviews

May see it as soon as end of next week.

Good luck with the TD224. Different is fun.

That's a nice pickup the td 224 is super rare and doesn't show up at all on ebay (assuming you got the one that had two bids on it since I doubt another one showed up) It can never hurt to buy something that will probably never show up again. Also tbh I doubt you could have gotten enough for the td 124 with sme 3009 to afford the td 224 but maybe you got a really good offer :)
