Should my pioneer HPM-60’s be like this??

I just bought a set of hpm-60’s and noticed the woofer was acting funny on one of the speakers. I had gotten the guy to play them for me and they sounded fine. It was when I hooked them up at home when one of the speakers sounded blown. I pin pointed it to the bottom left corner of the woofer. If I press my finger on the cone to the foam it stops rattling.

Should I be able to put my finger between the foam and the cone? Or does this mean I need to get new foam and re glue the cone?

I tired nail polish to seal it but it did no use.
I have done a bit of research but I can’t find a definite answer. All the help is appreciated!

If the foam is still good then all you need to do is reglue the surround to the cone.

The foam does look to be in good condition. This is where I was headed. I just wanted to make sure as I don’t know much about vintage speakers. First set

The glue does look to be thin and yes I can go all away around. Wasn’t sure if that was a thing for vintage speakers or not.

When I look at the pictures I see a lot of smeared glue at the surrounds and even at the membrane. I have sold dozens of HPM´s and S´es back then and never seen that. Especially when I consider the age of these speakers I think I am on the safe side when I say they are refoamed (the surrounds of my S-1010 which are younger were shot years ago). And so, no, this is not normal. Reglue them.

Two types of glue are typically used for gluing surrounds: Solvent based and PVA glue.

Solvent based dry quickly and, in my opinion, are messy. Sovelnt based glues are not forgiving at all.

I prefer PVA. It takes several minutes to dry, which gives you time to work with it. A popular PVA is Aleene's Tacky Glue. You can buy it at most craft and fabric stores, and lots of big box stores.

I appreciate this. I would have spent way more than I needed to on glue. In fact I have some of this laying around the house but I’m grabbing a fresh bottle to keep handy.

Hey I have an update for those who are curious to how this project went.

I originally thought re-glueing the cone to the foam would fix my issue. It did for the one woofer but no the other one that is in the pictures.

I had found that there was lots of glue build up from the last re-foaming I assume and the speaker wasn’t sitting right. So I stripped the old glue off and bought some new foam to re-foam the woofer. Spent a good day glueing everything down. I knew as soon as I glued everything I fixed my issue. Plugged it in and the speaker sounds great again.

thanks for the input on everything as I’m just entering the audiophile world and this being my first repair. I’m happy with the results.

my plan for these speakers next to give these a good cleaning. Make the rubber around the speaker is black again and fix any nicks on the cabinet itself
