Here is my only set of horns..
Toshiba SS-51, (Don't let the Toshiba badge fool ya... these things sound great!)

Very interesting. Sort of makes me think of a cross between Klipsch Cornwall and Klipsch Forte. Have you heard one of the aforementioned Klipsch speakers? I'm curious as to how your SS51 compares.
I'm interested as a mate recently acquired a pair of Toshiba SS-41 speakers. I know the lower end SS-30 are very well thought of for use with tube amps though are a bit bass shy.

Here's the mole cricket's horns. He was the first to use horns to amplify his sound. Chirps to be exact.

Oops, only 2.5 years late with the reply. Sorry.
It's been years since I've heard other horn type setups and they were in different locations, so only one real side by side comparison. (it's hard to compare after the fact).
I got to compare the SS-51's with a pair of JBL L-300's when I was picking up my speakers from a shop after they had done a small repair, the shop had just serviced the L300's and they were hooked up close to where mine were hooked up to test before paying the bill (different amps so not a direct comparison). It was a long time ago but I remember the JBL's sounded great, were very efficient but very mid heavy?. Ironically Toshiba call the mid range horn on the SS-51's a squawker, but to my ears they sounded more natural/musical than the L300's. But I might have been biased. Actually the manager said he thought the same, but he still hadn't been paid, so maybe he was biased or just whispering sweet nothings in my ear to get the cash.
Not long after that I had the caps replaced by someone else and they seem to go up another level. Since I've had them I've been so content I've sort of stopped looking, I would like to hear them in a side by side (same pre/amp/source), but I am content at the moment (plus I'd hate for them to get beat, because then I'd always be thinking about 'upgrading' once again).

In the jazz world, all wind instruments (those where you blow in the small end, wiggle your fingers and the sound comes out the big end), are called horns.

Sorry, Speakerlab 7. EV horns, rola woffers, huge cab, very dynamic and fun sounding. Like hi fi PAs ha ha ha. They sound really good with my Magnavox tube amp.
