Yeah that is interesting , I wonder what the actual advantages of having it on vs off . Would be cool to do a test and see if you could .

I had this plastic Acutex Head shell I haven't tried yet. I also had this Piezo YM 320E cart/Stylus I got for 23 bucks connected to a Luxman 210D head shell I got from the bay.
I have to say again, I just love the Tri-Pole sound . Not sure how worn the stylus is but it sounds really good.

I should have cleaned it up a bit ;)

Gotta agree three poles sound fantastic.

Shure V15 Type II. This is the original unimproved version. It’s not as shiny as the improved version and the decorative vertical bars on the side of the body are missing plus the name plate has black lettering instead of red. The improvements were all in the stylus assembly, the most significant being a reduction in the moving magnet structure which resulted in improved tracking in the low to mid frequencies. There was also a slight reduction in the output signal in the improved version. Hearing an audible difference depended on the type of music and records that were played.

I'm still breaking in my Audio Technica VM540ML. Must have about 10 hours on it. Very nice sounding so far!
I think you are going to be very pleased with the difference in sound once you reach 50 plus hours of playing time!! I know I was. I was listening to Christopher Cross’ Debut album 1979 release and during “ Ride Like The Wind “ the sound was so crisp , precise , smooth , well balanced and I could hear every instrument with total clarity and detail. It kicked ASS and I cranked up the volume and it was intense!! Love the AT740ML and your 540ML is the same cartridge with the exception of the Alluminum Alloy Cantilever , the 540 is plastic , however , that shouldn’t keep you from really enjoying it.
