Show us Your Small, Wood CD Storage Solutions

There have been several threads posted over the years about storage solutions for large CD collections of several hundred, or even thousands of CDs. I'm not looking for a large scale solution. I have ripped my entire CD collection of about 500 CDs onto a Mac Mini that I use as a music server. Those CDs are stored away out of sight in a closet in my den.

But, I have a slowly growing SACD collection that now numbers 40 and continues to grow by one or two a month. I have SACD players in my master bedroom and living room systems. So, I need some small scale CD storage options that will allow me to have easy access to these SACDs. I have an affinity for hardwood furniture and would like CD storage to match. Please don't post images of plastic CD racks. They are ubiquitous and easy to find. So, wood only please. Plus, I just like the look and feel of small, useful items made of wood.

Also, I won't put any hard limit on "small", but I'm generally looking for storage options for about 20 - 40 SACDs/CDs. Specifically, I am not looking for floor standing CD racks. So, rather than put a hard limit on small, I'd prefer to limit this thread to smallish table top or wall mounted units. Again, there are plenty of other threads for discussion larger capacity units.

I'll start be sharing the three I've found at my local Goodwill stores and ask other to shares photos of their's as well.

Here's the first one I found a couple years ago. It's made from solid walnut and is a lazy Susan style rotating carousel:

It holds 40 CDs (10 per side).

The only problem is when I got it, it was missing two of the plastic tray inserts. I have watched for other units I could cannibalize for parts, but haven't been able to locate any, or find a source of replacements inserts.

The inserts in this particular unit are made from a lightweight brown plastic. This is what they look like:

As mentioned, they hold 10 CDs each and are about 6.25" x 3.5". The closest I've been able to find are these from a dealer in South Africa:

But the ribs between CDs look thicker than my original inserts. If anyone knows of a source for these types of inserts, please share it here.

Here's my second find. Like the first, this one also holds 40 CDs, but it's a small table top rack that's approximately 15" x 12" x 5.75". It's made primarily of oak, but has some think accent stripes of different types of dark hardwood running up both sides:

It's a nice, attractive, well-built unit. I saw one of its brothers, of identical design and construction, for storing VHS tapes at a different local Goodwill over the weekend. At only $3.99 it was hard to pass up, but I don't won a VCR or any VHS video tapes. So, I left it for some other bargain hunter.

Here's my third, and perhaps my favorite. I just found this one yesterday. It's a Kalmar Designs teak CD storage rack with ejector levers. I remember seeing these in the distant past, and they are all over eBay and Etsy, but when one showed up at my local Goodwill, I couldn't say no.

A my SACD collection grows, I'd like to get one, or two more to mount on the wall above my teak Danish Modern credenza that currently houses my Shiny Silver System:

The last US company that makes solid oak CD and DVD storage is CDRacks.com. They have hundreds of sizes and finishes.

If you have access to a table saw, it's easy to make a box. Make an accurate diagram, get some 1/2" material and Robert's your mother's brother.

True, very true. I already have the table saw and a nice set of dado blades to make those finger joints at the corners, but I'd spend more on wood to make one nice box than I spent on those three boxes at Goodwill combined. Plus, I really like those cool ejector levers on the teak Kalmar Designs box. That would be a little more challenging to replicate.

Speaking of Kalmar, they also used to make similar teak cassette holders with ejector levers. That was my first exposure to their products. They also made a lot of desktop computer accessories in teak, back in the 1980s, like floppy disk storage boxes for both 5 1/4" and later 3 1/2" floppy disks. They had tambor style lids, like miniature roll top desks. I see those all the time at Goodwill.

Of course, they also made teak candlesticks and ice buckets and the other standard Danish Modern accessories. I really like the CD holder I found and plan to keep my eyes out for a couple more. As I mentioned, they are all over eBay and Etsy, but the prices are much higher and the shipping charges ridiculous.

BTW, I'm not asking for sources of more boxes, or plans to build my own, etc. Between those three, I have enough for now and know what to look for in the future should I need more.

I'm asking people to share photos of their own, unique, small, wooden CD storage solutions. Just like in all the Pics of Your Listening Space, Show Us Your Small Listening Space. Show Us Your Listening Chair type threads, I just want to see what everyone else is using. Partially for inspiration, but mostly, just becuase I enjoy perusing those types of threads.

Huh ... can't say as I even HAVE any "small wood cd's" ... <G>

Can't say as I get too fancy - adjustable shelves with dividers is all. That way I can adjust for jewel boxes, commercial dvds, and books as needed.

I made a little wooden rack back in the 90s, but it is buried behind the Christmas tree at the moment so I cant get a pic.

Yes, it does cost more to make something than buy ready made. I replicated two copies of an equipment stand and the materials per copy cost more more than twice the original's store bought price.

Unfortunately most of the time, what I want doesn't exist so I make it myself. I made a set of 7 baltic birch boxes (capacity about 70 each) for CD's but filled them. Was planning on modifying a shelving unit that held them to hold more which I was going to build but I spotted a 9 row CD rack in a Salvation Army for $14.99. It holds about 800 so I'm using that and it's just about full. I live in a <800sf condo so the goal is to maximize capacity in a minimum of space. Simple is best.

I have relegated my custom CD boxes to contain duplicate 8 tracks but may soon need to use them again for their intended purpose. I keep finding more CD's.
