Show Us Your Sonys!!!

Hey,

Thank you guys , it took quite a while to get it all the way i wanted, especialy the furniture ,witch is "home made".

As for all the Vfet lovers ,here,s a link to a Dutch site named "audiofreaks" [the place where i usualy hang out]
This link goes ,if it all goes well ,to a topic about Sony vintage. A man called Wim Vink has a impressive collection . Just look at the picture's :thmbsp: ,The writing is all in Dutch

El(ip)son,

The furniture you mention is very very good looking! And ingenious, too.

Wim sent me images of his impressive, I mean i m p r e s s i v e and I really mean impressive collection yesterday evening :)
Man, that stack reaches the ceiling so it must be around 2,50 or 2,65m high!

ElSon - that is a very nice rack. I especially like the extra height built under each foot of the TA-F808ES to promote the air flow to that hot running MOSFET beast. And, the fact that the back is also open to help promote airflow. But, the best part is your great selection of gear. :thmbsp:

BTW - dr*audio tells me that the STR-6200F tuner alignment has been completed and the unit is on its way back to me. A bit of a struggle to align as there is a gain adjustment in the IF strip that is not mentioned in the service manual and he had to discover via trial-and-error. Oh, well....should help when he gets to Brian's STR-6120, if it is the same. Warren tells me that it has a very sensitive tuner and sounds great. Should be just the thing to drive the set of Sony SS-M3 speakers in my LR set-up.

Speak of the devil!!! there's a TA-F808ES on Audiogon that just came on today. Wish I had a spare $800. Hmmm.......anyone want to buy a nice, used B-2? Needs a good cleaning, but would sell with the set of caps (Panasonic FM & Black Gate) for the up-grade. That would get me half way there.

Thanks , the airflow to the 808 was the problem when building a "rack' arround it. Playing with the doors open and with all the vent's in place [open back, drilled holes ] it will reach a ,i think healthy ,temp. of 48 degrees celsius. I hope everything will "last for a 1000 year".

When i put the link to the dutch forum [wim's link] here ,i also looked at the motion on that forum just after i posted it. Man ,it was busy on the "sony vintage' post with "gasts".
Axel ,I gues you "PM'd " Wim for additional info about all his goodies.

A few weeks ago there was a champ.808 on a Dutch 2e-hand site [marktplaats.nl] .While i was still thinking of getting me another one [spare] ,and that wasn't to long, it was gone . It's like "putting a Sonyesrabbit on a field ,and suddenly there are many, many vulture's around. :D

I have two TC-U2 cassette decks from late 1978. They are the best cassette deck i have ever owned. Unfortunately one of them only records on the right channel. It worked before i recapped it, but not after, and i can´t find out why. I have double checked to see if i have used the right capacitor values, and everything is right. I also have a Betamax SLC-20E in OK condition. My mother has a mid-fi Sony turntable (PS-LX-something) with a optical auto start system. There are four holes in the platter and a small lamp in the left rear corner. If you put on a 7" record the light shines through the outer holes and down on some light sensors. If you try to start it without a record on the platter the tone arm won´t even move.

I could never justify paying $500+ more for the 808 over the 707. I've got the service manuals for them (and the previous generation 333ESL/770ES/870ES.) IMHO, there is just not enough difference between all of these models to justify paying double or triple the amount for any one version.

I'm still waiting for my F333ESL to be delivered. Hopefully soon.

well, you get a bigger amp, some more power, a black anodized heatsink, gold-plated speaker posts and a supplementary G-Base on the top cover. And hasn't the 870 one more pair of output transistors, like the 830ES vs. 730ES? (can't remember)

Anyway, with any audiophile brand, those upgrades would justify at least a doubling up of the price :D so consider yourself lucky to be able to have all this for a measly 500$ :D :D :D

Axel, I checked the service manuals and the 808ES has the exact same output transistors as the 707ES. I found the same thing with the 333ESL/770ES and 870ES. I believe there were an extra set only with the F800ES and F830ES.

The main differences I could find between all of these models (of the same model year), other than chassis parts, were different transformer part #s, slightly different cap sizes, and some different resistors specs, all of which I assume is to give a little more dynamic power to the higher model. Surprisingly the 707ES has bigger main filter caps than the 808ES (18000uF vs 15000uF). The 870ES does have bigger caps than the 770ES (22000uF vs 18000uF)

Black anodize on the heatsink does nothing to improve the sound or efficiency of cooling, its purely cosmetics. I don't hold too much weight in gold plating either.

When talking about whether the price is worth it, I'm comparing the $250-$350 price range that I've seen the 333ESL/770ES/707ES sell at versus the price that the Audiogon seller is asking for his 808ES. The 808ES is a nice amp, but I believe you could get better for that high price.

With the F700ES/F800ES and F730ES/F830ES, there were greater differences that justified the price increase. Two transformers vs one, extra set of output transistors, etc. The specs showed a much bigger difference in those models as well.

thanks, I never could find out about the transistors' count on the last two generations (or versions shall we say) of ES III!
so, indeed, the line drawn is at the F830ES/730ES.

and, yes, 800$ for a 808ES is a little too much.

STR-6200F is home and singing its lovely song driving a pair of Sony SS-M3 monitors in the LR system. Sources are FM (of course) and a Toshiba DVD/CD/SACD/VHS combo player for driving the TV. Lovely to look at and even better to listen to. Thanks for the good job EW and dr*audio. :thmbsp:

Added a close-up pic. Has a headphone and line-in jack on the left and an Aux 3 jack on the right. Ton of inputs on this unit. The more I listen to it the better it sounds. Now if I could just find that set of $10 JBL L-300 speakers, I would be all set. :D

Thanks. The STR-6200F is just the thing for the LR. :thmbsp: Next step is the cherry cabinet to match the furniture (got's to improve that WAF :D ). It really is a very nice sounding and looking (IMHO) receiver. I've just ordered some better wiring for the speakers.

As far as the B-2s, just sold one and will be selling one more. Thought I might need the extras, but have been rock-solid without a hiccup in the past two years. If you don't count a crumbling fuse and burned out bulb (think both were originals). The remaining three will do me fine. PM if interested.

Just found out the bad news from my brother...

he sold the old Sony receiver that belonged to my parents a while back...it was vintage 1967 or 8 and had about 35 wpc. It looked VERY similar to your photo above this in your post "Y B-2". I just wish that I could remember the model number. You know, I think that the knobs had a smooth external perimeters, but I just can't be sure. I recall that it was a very nice receiver and matched up well with the old AR speakers...

Based on info from Brian and Axel, I would guess it is an STR-6060, which was a few years older. Do a search on STR-6120 and STR-6060 in the Vintage Forum and you'll quite a bit of info on same. Not sure if Axel put into TVK, but you could check there, as well. Unfortunately for us, Brian keeps his gear unseen (no digital camera). So am not sure if anyone else has posted a pic for you to see. The STR-6200F and STR-6120 both make 70wpc, so probably not one of them. But, I am not sure what the STR-6060 makes. Do believe it has the smooth knobs, though.

Very nice...

outside and in! It really looks like these units were VERY well constructed.

These earliest series of Sony receivers (STR-6060/6120/6200) were all pretty much point-to-point wiring underneath those boards. So much so that EW stated when I ask if he would recap that to do so would be 'a labor of love'. Needless to say he did not mind repairing the couple of transistors and doing a thorough cleaning, but was unable to convince him to 'love' it enough to recap. Was followed by a tuner alignment (this is an FM, only, receiver, as all TOTL receivers should be) by dr*audio. And, it sounds terrific. I think it does a better job of driving the Sony SS-M3 monitors than any other amp I've had on them. And it is a very sensitive tuner. Am using a 300 ohm T at the moment and it is doing a great job on our jazz/classical station at 90.1. If you look at the STR-6120 thread Brian started you can see a couple of close-up pic's that EW posted of the STR-6200F. Pretty busy place in there with all that wiring.

Hmmm....just checked Brian's STR-6120 thread and the pic's aren't there. Perhaps Brian or EW will see this an direct us to the correct thread for the pic's. Wish I could stay to see, but I'm headed upstairs to listen to my new combo. Vintage Sony Rules!!!!   (along with Yamaha, of course :D ).

Oh like my Marantz model 19 receiver :thmbsp:

I'm really attracted to the Sony style and construction of the late 60s-early 70s. Understated, overbuilt. Just great vintage heritage....

Got my STR-6200F via FedEx yesterday. The seller misrepresented it - the FM stereo was supposed to work , just the indicator light was burnt out - ha. The case was also a bit busted up.

The FM does do mono just fine but the "Auto FM Stereo" switch just works in auto which tells me that the MPX circuits are bad. Just like everyone elses. Boohoo.

Using a SACD via one of the THREE aux inputs, the sound was great.

The looks are just fabulous by my lights - powerful and classy, matches the sound.

Definitely a keeper and worth the investment in refurbishment I'll be making AFTER April 15.
