Shure M44-7

Hi all! I have a Shure M44-7 cartridge that needs a needle. I am debating whether I should get a N44-7 needle, or a N44-G. I have read reviews stating that the M44-G cartridge is more detailed and less harsh than the M44-7, but I don't know if the needle will make a difference. Has anyone put a N44-G needle on a M44-7 cartridge. Boy... that sounds confusing. :scratch2:

The M44-G tracks very light for a conical, and may mis-track on your table.

I have a vintage M44-7 with a new N44-7 stylus and, set to track at 2 grams, it sounds wonderful on pre-1967 mono records, but I wouldn't expect much fidelity-wise from it on modern stereo records.

I'd either get another cart altogether or maybe get an N44E from Jico: http://stylus.export-japan.com/adva...ion=1&image.x=0&image.y=0&manufacturers_id=76

These carts are keepers

Been using the M44 and M55's on and off since age 16. They are one of the best carts I've used. My Dual has a M55 with a Jico elliptical stylus. I got for $35. I have always like the sound. They have plent of high end and sound good on records of less than good condition. I dont feel that you loose any highend with either.

I have a M44 on my Dual 1009. It the original 1009 with no cue or anti -skate. I disagree with pior post on playing modern LPs. They sound fine. tody while wroking the yard I put on a reissue of Mile Davis' Tutu LP. It sounded great. Full frequency. Great bass with plenty of highend! The Dual is tied to a Kenwood KR 5400 ( dump find! ) using JBL L100s up front and KLH Model 20s on the rear. I found the sound very pleasing.

Later, I went in the livingroom. Put on a mid eighties ZZ Top LP. Modern in my judgement. Sounded great too. This set has a Dual 1219 with a M55. I recommend the JICO stylus. I have a Credance Clearwater LP. The 1219 will play the title cut. None of the other Dual will. The 1009Sk,1019, and the 1009all skip. The 1009SK and 1019 have Shure M91EDs on them. Must be the combination of the JICO stylus and the 1219's tonearm.

As funds become available, I plan to put JICO"s on the other Duals. Try one, you wont be disappointed.

The M44-7 is a "broadcast" cart with a high output and generally, a conical stylus. Ive read where it is/was used in Juke boxes and DJ work. It is apparently so well liked that they have a stylus for all occasions now.
Ive got one and will be mounting it on a Miracord 45 for console stereo duty. Ive been looking around a bit because its unknown and may need a new stylus and I think Im just gonna go with an original style conical.

Keep it in its element so to speak. Jico looks to be the place with the price and selection.

I had the M44-7 on my Dual cs-521 with the N44-7 stylus, and it sounded pretty good. I like the high output and big bass, but there's so many different M44 stylus, I'm trying to decide which one to get.

Do remember the Shure M 44 line were audiophile cartridges to begin with when introduced in 1963 and top of the line before the original V 15 introduction in 1964. A good versatile cartridge overall! The 7 stylus is the best for most needs.

I just picked up a Pioneer PL-112 from a friend for free. The TT is in great shape, but the dust cover is trashed. This TT has a nice after market Pioneer headshell with a pickering XV-15/623E cartridge combo on it, and It seems to get good reviews so I'll be experimenting with that cartridge as well, but I do plan on putting a new needle on the M44-7. I figure that with a couple different headshells set up, I can play around and find the sound I'm looking for...Now I need to get these cartridges properly set up and aligned on the headshells. I'm kinda new at this TT tweaking. I have a Dual CS-521, a Sanyo TP-805, and the Pioneer PL-112, and I'm trying to find the best turntable -cartridge combo, then I'll sell the others cheap. The Dual and the Sanyo are mint, and I only have $25 invested so far in all three TT's.
