Shure R47XT vs. M95ED

I recently acquired a Shure R47XT with a turntable purchase.
It appears to be a cartridge that was made for Radio Shack.
It has a Shure 5X stylus (broken).
I checked the Shure cross reference guide and it says to use a M97xE.
I also have an M95ED for which the M97xE is also recomended.
I wonder if there would be much difference between the cartridges
if they are both fitted with the M97xe.
Does anyone have any experience with these cartridges using this particular upgrade?
Any good?
Would this be the best stylus choice for either?
One is for a Pioneer PL117D and the other for a Dual 1228.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lance

I think you are misreading the reference. There is no current Shure stylus that will fit those cartridges. What the chart is suggesting is a replacement cartridge.

Your best bet may be to pick up a stylus such as this: PFANSTIEHL 4767-DE
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290496034564?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I have this stylus and it performs quite well at 1.5 gm. I also have a Realistic R25XT which I believe is the same cartridge as yours with a 3X stylus. It tracks a little heavier at 3 gm but sounds very good. I believe a stylus that fits an M95 will fit those Realistic/Shure bodies, but I have not tried them. With the same stylus, they will probably sound and perform the same.

Yes you are right, it is for suggested cartridge replacement.
It would have been too easy....
According to a stylus website there are still some Shure replacements.
http://www.stereoneedles.com/Shure.html
The M95ED falls into group F and it was suggested by them that the M95HE would be the best choice making it a hyper elliptical cartridge.
I wonder how the PFANSTIEHL compair..
they are certainly MUCH less expensive.
Also a new M97xE cartridge would be cheaper than the Shure stylus.
What would be a better choice?

There are several threads you can search on this site discussing the Phansteihl and EV replacement styli for Shure cartridges. I have used both with very good results. In fact, mine compared favorably with the OEM Shure stylus I have. They are well worth the $15-16 you pay for them.

Any stylus that will fit the M95 will fit the R47XT, and vice versa (in theory*). If I recall correctly, the R47XT was a rebadged Shure M75.

There's not much difference between the two, perhaps the M95 sounds a bit better (despite less favorable specs...).

This thread is probably relevant to the OP's interests.

*Edit: I just checked, and my generic N95 won't fit my R47EDT. Perhaps with a bit of surgery...

Correct, you can perform surgery to a M95 stylus to make fit. As i've done that. The R47ED will take any M75 stylus, 3X-5X, etc. and If you can find one, the Ne95ed stylus will fit. aftermarket EVG 760-DE and EVG PM3177DE fits.

. . . a new M97xE cartridge would be cheaper than the Shure stylus.
What would be a better choice?

I would recommend the M97xE. The advantages of the aluminum mounting block and the stabilizer brush are well worth it, in my opinion. The M97xE is the best-sounding Shure I've owned.

The M95 and the R47XT and the R25XT were wide body cartridges. The EDT was not, I believe. I know that the Shure reference chart says that you can use an M75 stylus on an R25XT, but you can not. The body is too wide. I tried it and you would have to cut off the side tabs to make it work. On the other hand, the M95 stylus just may work.

Odd, I have a R47XT, and a R25XT. I have a NOS 3X mounted on the R25, and a M75 on the R47. I also have a N95ed stylus I had to modify to make fit.
All of the styli I have for either the 25 or 47 fit my M75 cart just fine as well.

That is really strange. I have three R25XT cartridges with 3X styli. All are wide, V-shaped metal bodies. The 3X stylus will fit on my M75 and M91 cartridges, but the M75 stylus will not fit on the R25XT-it is too narrow for the body. I wonder if Radio Shack sold two different varieties under the same model number.

Picked up a Sansui TT with a R47XT cart and no stylus a while back. I searched the forums and tried a few styli. I figured I'd post my 2 cents to help the next guy trying to get a needle for a R47XT not make my mistakes.

I found the Shure M70EJ N70EJ to be the best fit. Pfanstiel # is a 4768-DE or 4768. I have included pics to show how well it fits. I've tried both the Pfanstiel and Jico elipticals and I would give a slight edge to the Jico. It sounded better balanced to my ears.

A stylus for a Shure X95XX cart like 4767 XX will not fit without modification. Mods that require you have a steady hand and deft skill with an exacto knife. There are many more better sounding styli for the X95 so if you really want to get the best possible sound out of your R47XT cart, mod'ing a X95 stylus is the best you can do.

Despite it's humble ranking in the Shure family, the 70 series needle on a R47XT cart is a very nice sounding bang-for-the-buck combo but to my ears it can't compare to a X95XX with a hi end stylus. Don't get me wrong, I don't want anyone to think the R47XT is a poor cart but if you are going for hi end sound, I would recommend buying a X95XX hi end stylus like the Jico SAS and skip the butchering and buy an actual Shure X95XX cart to go with it.

Like I said, just my 2 cents.

If, as it obviously does, the N70 stylus fits, then the N75 will as well. That opens up the possibility of, among other good options, a JICO SAS.

I didn't know that. :scratch2: Thank you. Sometime I don't alway have a keen grasp of the obvious.

Looks like a Jico SAS for a 95 and a 75 are the same price. If anything, this is all the more a reason for people to not butcher a X95 stylus.

I always recommend the M97xE best price/performance today, and own 2 of them, but I own other older Shures that sound a little better but with OEM styli they go for 7-8 times as much, if you can find them with new styli.

I've been thinking about this and there's something I've overlooked here. If we accept that the R47XT is electrically the same as the M95 or M97 body (I think it is) then we have to consider that the resistance and inductance of these bodies are different from the M70 and M75 bodies, especially the resistance.

The DCR of the M70/75 body is 630 ohms, while it's 1,550 ohms in the M95/97. Inductance for the M70/75 is 720mH and it's 650mH for the M95/97. So, while the N75 styli will work, it might be necessary to play with the loading to get the best out of the combination.

John

I also believe that the R47XT is the same body as M95 and M97. It has plastic bits to prevent using those styli though. The Realistic ED series of cartridges are the same as the Shure M75 and the XT series are the Shure NDC. The correct styli are 8X, 5X, and 3X. Jico (and probably others) do make styli for the NDC series. It is the most universal stylus for the Shure lineup. They were made to fit the wide bodies but have a really thin grip, so actually fit nearly all common Shure carts, M70, M75 and variants, M91, M95 and M97 and variants, without modification. When possible I buy the NDC replacements because I can use them in any of the Shure cartridges that I have. I have an SAS NDC-EJ and can use it on all of my Shures.

Last year I got an R47 cart on a TT. You are correct the M75 is the equivalent. A$12 EVG M75 stylus sounds very nice on it.

I have both a V15 Type III and a V15 Type IV the first with a JICO/SAS stylus and the second with an OEM VN45HE stylus. I put one of my M95EDs with a NOS N95ED stylus on my Sl 1200 MK2 just last night, and it is a really nice sounding cart even compared to the V15s on the same table.

The R47XT has the vee bottomed body that was introduced with the M95 series. There were several other Radio Shack cartridges, the R47EB, the R47ED and the R47EDT that used the earlier flat bottomed body of the M75 and M91 cartridges.

Pretty confusing of Radio Shack to use a very similar model number for cartridges based on different bodies.
