Shure Realistic R1000XT

Now that we can't take Shure for granted any more, I decided to give some of my neglected cartridges a listen.

This week it's the Realistic branded Shure R1000XT with original .2 x .7 mil stylus. It was one of the last Realistic's that were made in USA. It's very lively yet smooth sounding and I prefer it to the M97xE.

Any one else using one?

Looks different from the m95 or the m97 to me. Same generator different body?

The rxt4 is an m97ed in disguise and looks it.

All ERA lll and later cartridges have the same body shape, which is distinct from the earlier M75 / M91 that @Balifly was referring to. The plastic mounts on the other hand are all different. The RXT4 has the same plastic mount as the M97 and SC39 series so the styli are interchangeable between them.

Yup, I'm using one too. It was on a beat up JVC TT at a tag sale for $8, so I bought it for the cart. I got an EVG stylus for it and it sounds pretty good. It is smooth with good bass and has some punch, which is basically the sound I like.

I would be willing to bet that the R100XT cart is identical to the R25XT (of which I have two) and the R47XT, excepting colors and styli. FWIW, as I have been in Shure exploration mode of late, and since the plastic mount on one of my used R25XTs came off (old brittle glue) I confirmed, as Malden notes above, that the R25XT, m97xe and sc35c all have identical body shapes.

I also used clippers to clip off that large plastic "nose" from the front of the R25XT before gluing the mount back on with super glue. The cart now accepts a plethora of styli, and I'm currently using a TVOM light-tracker 4776-D7T, designed for the sc35c, in it. I really like these carts, especially without the large plastic nose on the front. Nice smooth Shure sound without the veil that seems inherent to the m97xe.

I have a R1000ED that came with my last TT estate sale Garrard Zero 100. The body looks more like a V15 without the vacuum chrome treatment.

Yes they have identical body shapes but electrically they differ.

What originally drew me to the R1000XT was the elegant design of the plastic mount. It is also one of the lightest Shure cartridges. It's worth it to get a proper stylus that fits the body as is.

My Pioneer PL-518 came with a Realistic R1000 cartridge of some sort (probably ED or EDT, looked different than the XT shown here). Unfortunately, whoever installed it had overtightened the mounting screws, cracking the plastic mounts. I brought it to a local used record store, where the owner replaced it with a similar R47 (IIRC) body which took the same M75-type stylus.

I'm using one, upgraded the stylus with a Shure N110HE Hyper-Ridge tip. Sounds fabulous.

The original stylus reads "Shure 8X" and the grip is black.

It sounds a bit harsh. I had another generic that looks like the 8X and just swapped it, it is smoother.
