Shure V15 Cartridges.

Hi,

Do the Shure V15 cartridges go ideal with the Rega RB250/300 arms?

I'm just wondering, I might think about giving the Shure V15 stuff one last try.

I once had a V15 Type 111 on my Michell Syncro with a Rega RB300.

I did have some problems with the V15, It Hummmmzzzzz a lot.

And it didn't sound that nice. The thing is I didn't have it that long and never played it much. Considering it had a new stylus on it. (But it was not a genuine shure stylus)

I now have a New Rega RB250 with a Denon DL110. The Denon really sound good. I bet the Shure V15 will not hold a candle to the Denon.



Any helps please.

I V15 should work fine with a REGA arm. A humm is a different problem than matching the arm, as a V15 shouldn't hum. It could be many things, bad wire to a bad cart.
 
No idea on the Rega arm, but I have two V15 III's and neither of them hum on my SL-1200.

The JICO SAS stylus for the V15 is supposed to be very nice.
 
I'm a Shure fan as well and currently have a V15 mkV mounted and used regularly on my AR 'table and arm. The Shure and AR are a very, very good combination.

Having said that, I'm not sure the high compliance Shure cartridges are a good match for your RB300 arm. The RB300 is an outstanding arm, but I think a medium compliance cartridge would be a much better and more musical combination than the Shures. You might want to consider one of the Grados or a Dynavector 10x5, if you want to give a HOMC a try. Of course Grado's can be hummers too, but in my experience it is an extremely low level hum that takes nothing away from the music.

I am not real familar with the Ortofon, Audio-Technica, or Goldring lines of cartridges, but there are lots of AK'rs that love them. So there might be some real nice sounding medium compliance MM's there as well. Hopefully, some of those other AK'rs more familar with these lines will chime-in too.

A good Shure with a newish suspension will be a high compliance cartridge (tracking at say 1.3 grams). About the same as an AT440MLa or an AT150MLX. My Grados all sound better tracking a bit higher at say 1.8 grams. That's still considered a high compliance cartridge. Most Hi-Fi Ortofons track in that range too. If you've had good luck with other cartridges tracking in that range on that arm, your good to go.

I have a v15 IV that hums too. It's well mounted with high quality wires. It hums on some TTs and not others. I just don't use it on tables it does not agree with. In about the same sonic envelope with yet a bit more detail is the AT150MLX. It tracks very well and has a similar sound profile to the Shure v15 IV with a JICO stylus. The AT does not hum on any table that I own.
 
Vint, out of curiosity, what do you have your tracking and anti-skating set at? I have a 1210 that I just put a V15 III on with original needle and it sounds really bright and has lots of sibilence at times. I have checked the alignment and it seems fine and I have the tracking at 1.25 (same with antiskate). The stylus looks to be in great shape (looked through a handlens) and is perfectly straight. I might just buy the SAS replacement but if my problem is with the cart I may just upgrade.

If I might go back to MM cartridges, I might consider the Rega super Elys cartridge. I really liked how the standerd elys performed.

And I don't think the Shure V15's will be able to hold a candle to my Denon DL110.

I just read a review of the Rega P3-24 turntable in the July 2008 issue of Stereophile. In the article Michael Fremer gave the new Rega a thorough review and used both the Rega Elys and the Rega Exact 2 cartridges. He seemed to really like the Exact 2 MM cartridge and thought it delivered quite a bit more music than than the Elys. So, I think I'd put that on my short list. He seems tough to please, so when he recommends something, I think it is definitely worth checking out!

Last weekend I made my first trip to an audio dealer in a long, long time and drove over to Access to Music in San Rafael to talk to those folks about updating my Linn. They are both a Rega and Dynavector dealer, in addition to Linn and I was able to listen to several Rega/Dynavector setups while I was there. Wow, what a nice combination. The Rega P3/Dynavector 10x5 was a very nice combination, as well as the Rega P5/Dynavector X20H. I don't think you could go wrong with either one of those cartridges, but that would also depend on what you are using for a phono stage. The P3/10x5 I listened to was through a Cambridge integrated amp and outboard phono stage. The P5/X20H was through the Dynavector phono stage and both setups sounded very, very nice. In both cases the speakers were Dali.

So, I think my short list would definitely include both the Rega and Dynavector lines, as well as the Grados. :music:
