Silvertone 1483 power transformer

I am currently restoring a Silvertone 1483 with a blown power transformer. I see mercury mag sells a drop in replacement for the 1483, but it is 200$ and I’m trying to not spend that. Does anyone know of another suitable replacement?

have the specs for the transformer? There is usually a way to sub something else but it may require a little creativity. Different mounting holes, maybe it will have an extra winding, stuff like that. Hammond makes a bunch of them, so does Edcor, or you might find a good used or NOS transformer from any number of makers on ebay. Stancor, Triad, Merrit, lots of others made replacement transformers and they still turn up.


the exact replacement is the easy route though. I just put one of the Mercury ones in a solid state Sunn amp that is on my bench. Bolted right in and so far as I can tell its an exact match for the missing original, except not as ugly. The originals seemed to have been very poorly dipped in varnish and they are lumpy.

If the schematic online I saw is accurate (720VCT, 5V, 6.3V), a Hammond 274AX will do just fine.

I think the Hammond (138 mA) would be fine, since the 5Y3 can only supply 125 mA. Problem is that the original is mounted through-chassis, not vertically. What's the core size? (If the Hammond is the same, end bells from the original could make it drop in) Hammond has a line of guitar replacement transformers too, might be one that's close.
