I have been rocking a SIMA W2002 power amp along with an ADCOM GFP-555 preamp for some time now and have enjoyed it. I recently spotted an ADCOM GFA-535 for sale at a local shop for $140 CAD, which appears to be cheaper than the average going rate. I don't need two power amps, so I have no need to pick up the GFA535...unless I were to sell off my SIMA...
From what I can find, the SIMA is rated at 125 wpc, while the GFA535 at 60 wpc, so the latter would have significantly less power. What I'm unsure about is if a power amp brings much else to the table aside from pure power. How much of the sound is coloured by a pre vs a power amp (newbie question)? Is the GFA-535 simply going to mean less juice and therefore a downgrade? Or will it sound much different/potentially better (it appears to be positively reviewed online)?
I do have a bit of money invested in the SIMA from purchasing it second-hand and then subsequently paying for some repairs, plus I find it to be quite an attractive unit, so I'm not too keen to let it go. I also, however, am very keen on the idea of having matching components or somewhat matching components, i.e. two Adcom pieces together.
Advice for a newbie?
