Patrick Stewart, the sophisticated actor who brought a Shakespearean touch to Star Trek and X-Men as he made an otherworldly transformation from British stage veteran to sci-fi icon, has died. He was 86. Stewart died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles following “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia,” longtime spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak announced.

I've seen this on The Hollywood reporter and a number of above-board sites - its apparently true.

Loved him Excaliber and Dune - and that Star Trek thing he did, and the X guy in the chair! ;)

RIP sir!

An amazing actor and so well spoken, loved his roles in X-Men and the Star Trek movies. R.I.P. Patrick Stewart, aka Charles Xavier, Jean-Luc Picard.

Did a quick look-see on how many accomplishments in the entertainment field, and Patrick's participation for over 60 years was staggering!

63 movies, over 40 stage productions, numerous TV series, winning 10 acting awards, and even into computer games!

He left his "stamp" on many viewing offerings!

RIP Mr. Stewart

He was also a prolific voiceover actor. From serious documentary to Family Guy and American Dad cartoons.

Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia can be an incredibly degrading manner of death. "Poignant Journey" conveys sad connotations. I am glad that he lived a long and productive life and I am glad to know that his suffering was brief and has ended. He would be much happier where he is now.

Farewell Captain Picard.

His voice and likeness was also used in American Dad as Director Bullock. I always found the contrast between his Shakesperian voice and the character's twisted actions hysterical.
