SL-D2 tonearm on SL-1500 MKI?

Recently picked up a cheap SL-1500MK1. It seems to work really good and is in great cosmetic condition. Except it seems to have an issue with the left channel. I tried two different Technics headshells each with a different cartridge installed and same result each time.

Would it be possible to swap the tonearm with an SL-D2? I have a D2 sitting around that is rather beat up cosmetically that could be a loaner. Worth doing? Your thoughts?

Before you even begin to consider something like swapping tonearms youneed to find out where the problem is. So far all you know is that it isn'tin the cartridge and it isn't in the headshell. It might be in the tonearm but it might not so what do you gain by swapping the arm only to learn the problem is elsewhere?

Actually, the most common reason for a dead channel is a bad RCA cable. You need to spend about 20 minutes with a digital multimeter checking for continuity in the tonearm and cables (separately). Also check to see tat one of the contact pins in the tonearm collet isn't stuck in its retracted position.

I will be interested to see if you figure out how to remove the D2 tonearm and install
in the other TT.

Don't have a multimeter in my apartment. However when I turn my amp (SX-750) past half way I can hear music faintly coming out of the left channel. What could this mean?

It means you need to get a multimeter.

Switched out a 1200 MKII arm on a 1500 a while back and still using it. This doesn't help any but never say never.

Harbor Freight sells a surprisingly decent one for just a couple of bucks. I think the normal price is $8.99 but they frequently have them on sale for $4.00 or $5.99.

It's easy....Once you pull the old arm out and try to fit the new, you will see what has to be done. it was a matter of taking a file and removing some of the aluminum to get the new arm to fit. The 1200 arms base is completely round and the hole isn't. You will also have to drill 3 holes or notches to mount it. A little soldering and your done. It sounds like more work than it really is....
