Well, I went back and got that EQ, 3 minutes after the store opened. Thanks Similost! :banana:

have not hooked it up yet, but I tested as best I could in-store. $20 for a AudioSource Model 8 Series 2 EQ.

THEN I saw that they had a LOT more vinyl. Here's what I got:

On a sidenote, how long does it take you to clean all that vinyl after you get home.

I just got my TT Friday. My son and I went out Saturday and hit some thrift stores for records. They are very dirty. Today I plan on spending a bit of time cleaning them.

I hope the EQ works out for you as well, I have one coming in the mail this week (I got it off ePay).

Well, sadly, I cannot clean my records, as I don't have a way to do so, so I leave a LOT of stuff there that I cannot assume to be in playable condition right from when I get them.

I am toying with the idea of a DIY RCM, but I don't have anything to base it on........I don't think that a Technics SL-Q200 is sturdy enough for that kind of duty....
 
I love Fats Domino and any early rock. I just got a Fats Domino the other day and a Bo Diddley also. Nice job at the thrift.
 
Hey David, definitely go the DIY VCM route until you can luck into a VPI or something like it. A buddy of mine rigged an armless TT and a cheap shop vacuum with a slotted record cleaning tube like VPI's. He has to manually hold the vacuum onto the record but it does the trick nicely.

Why can you not clean the vinyl? Do you not have hands?

Mix up some solution, put it in a spray bottle, grab some microfiber cloth and get to work!

RCM's are just new technology, the manual way is old technology. :D
 
Alright...

I just spent over 2 hours cleaning the records I just picked up (this was my first time). I used the Discwasher D4 solution and the little brush. The fellow that sold me my TT included a Discwasher kit (complete with Zerostat gun). The records look good as new except for a few scratched here and there.

They are correct: a DIY cleaner is the way to go. A friend of mine turned me on to these years ago and I have made some modifications over the years but it works fine and I,m pretty happy with it. Hope you have better luck with the EQ than you had with the amp a couple of weeks ago!
 
Congrats on getting the eq and the additional albums. You must live close to a GW or SA or have awesome parents to drive you there. I have a 30 mile trip one way just to get to one so only go about once a week. Keep up the good hunting, Mave
 
David, I own a Nitty Gritty record cleaning machine & it was probably one of the smartest moves I ever made as far as audio related equipment goes, BUT if I had it all to do over again, I'd probably go for building my own.

There's really not much at all to them (any of them Nitty Gritty, VPI, others) especially if you have a model with manual rotation & fluid application like mine (The Record Master iirc). It does an excellent job & I'm glad I've got it, but after opening it up once, I know I could have built the same thing myself, maybe even better for probably about a fourth of the cost of the Nitty Gritty, if even that much.

I say try building your own & put Nitty Gritty to shame. :thmbsp:
I had a HUGE backlog of thrift store, garage sale & flea market vinyl I hadn't gotten around to playing for fear of massive amounts of dirt & debris in the grooves. Having a good record cleaning machine has made it possible to get some of these old & not so old gems in the kind of condition where they're as playable as anything from an expensive record shop or that auction site.

Maybe a little less than a mile away......I am just getting over a cold, so my mother stopped off there on the way home from getting flowers for my wonderful girlfriend. Once I get some $$$$$$, I will go there every couple of days or so, instead of every couple of weeks.

WITH the EQ engaged, however.....everything sounds closed, and there is no spaciousness left, it seems.....sounds a lot like mono....all controls are set to flat, too.


Any ideas?
 
Nice haul on the vinyl! You've really been cleaning up at the GW lately. They sure seem to get alot better stuff than mine does. As far as cleaning the records is concerned, I also vote for the manual method. The RCMs are nice, but I prefer the simple approach. Besides the time you save cleaning the vinyl with a RCM you'll probaby spend cleaning and maintaining the machine itself. :scratch2:

That's a real nice EQ. It was my favorite of any I've owned, and is now owned by a good friend and fellow AKer- part of a christmas thingy.

If I don't go Parametric with my EQ, I'll grab another one of those Audiosource EQs again, someday.:thmbsp:
