Slow motor/platter on BSR

Hi,

I just acquired a mid sixties sears silvertone record player/radio console.#

Everything works fine except the rpms are about 2, #- 2 1/2 times slow.#

I cleaned all the old grease and regreased everything.#

The idler wheel seems fine.#
When the console has been off for awhile and then on, the platter turns half speed for about 5-7 mins then resumes a playable speed - of course still being a few rpms slow.#

Any ideas? Do I need a new motor?
Any help would be much appreciated.#

How much torque do you have when the platter is being powered? That is, can you stop the turning platter with your hand and does it feel like it is being pulled along well? Does the platter immediately return to speed or does it take a bit of time to 'get going' again?

You can test the motor torque by pulling the platter and pinching the armature pulley with your fingers. It should have a strong pull to it and you should not be able to stop it running with your fingers. If the armature gets hot fast, you may have motor problems.

Any low-torque motor in the typical BSR should be taken apart and cleaned. Take care not to clean the scintered bronze bearings too much as they had (at manufacture) oil impregnated in them. Make sure, however, that there's no gunk or dust buildup in there. The armature should spin freely when not powered up.

These are simple TTs and can be returned to health relatively easily.

Cheers,

David

I don't believe Silvertone used BSR changers in their consoles until the early '70's, they
used Crescent.
At any rate, the symptoms you describe sound like the motor needs to be taken
apart and the bearings cleaned and re-oiled with turbine oil.

Thanks for your response.
I am going to get at the motor
And clean it and oil it.
What is turbine oil? Where could I buy it?
Thanks.
