Slowing down DD TT. Cool or Crazy?

Hi folks,

I was wondering if it's possible to slow down a DD TT.

The thing is I'm considering different possibilities for a drive system for an RCM I plan on building pretty soon. I have a Pioneer DD (it was free and it's pretty beat up but runs) that's just sitting there so I was thinking about that being another option. It may involve way more than I'm willing to/can do......but...

I'm just putting it out there and see what comes back.

I was starting to question my own sanity.....well maybe I still should:scratch2:, when I didn't get any response to my query but, I just read a thread on modding a Technics TT to play 78's....
So that got me thinking it has to be possible to mod a DD TT to run slower:scratch2:

I may be biting off more than I can chew but it's worth a shot:yes:

If I were able to slow the TT down to run at 16 rpm or so would it have enough torque to be used for an RCM?

Hopefully someone can clue me in on the possibilities or tell me to go get some professional help

It is possible to do that. FG Servo DD motors are much simpler - in many cases just a matter of changing some resistors or even adjusting trimmers to their extreme position.

If I recall correctly, DC Electric motors have constant torque and (horse)power is increasing with rpm so decreasing rpm doesn't reduce torque.

OTOH, it an RCM is what you want, then you don't really need to rotate slowly. I'm currently refining an add-on module for a standard headshell (perhaps Technics headshells are more appropriate for that) that converts any TT into a manual version of Keith Monks audio RCM.

I would be happy to share pictures and ideas.
