SMAC September 2009

Folks:

The September SMAC meeting will be held on Saturday, September 19th from 1pm to 6pm at the Novi Sheraton Hotel: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=2019

Grumpy is our host and will be giving us a special treat as we move into our "new" meeting format. As some of you know, this hotel will be the site of the next AK Fest 2010. So it is a privilege indeed that SMAC is being given a special sneak preview of this venue. Of course, we'll need to be on our best behavior.

Details to come: However, at this time, we do know that, in one room, Wadia will be giving a presentation (complete with digital system and some great electronics) on high-resolution digital audio. In addition, there will be a second room highlighting analog and Classic Audio Reproduction T3 speakers as well as a member's complete system.

Stay tuned.

Don't forget: the September SMAC meet is tomorrow from 1pm to 6pm. Martin's presentation on Hi-Rez audio will start at 1:30pm. Hope to see you there!

Looking forward to this one. Is the i170 capable of higher than 16bit/44.1kHz playback (assuming I can load an iPod with a hi-res file)? The specs do not say.

Well, definitely bring this question.

But it would seem to me that since the 170i transport is simply bypassing the onboard DAC of the IPOD then whatever resolution is on the IPOD should come out unencumbered. It would be up to whatever DAC you had connected to the 170i to accept or not accept the hi-rez sampling rate.

Pretty interesting day, thanks to Grumpy for arranging this, Rob for hauling his rig across town, John Wolff for making me move into the chair he had nailed down (or the sweet spot) and Mr. Wadia (whose name escapes me. was it Martin?) for the interesting demo.

What I really find interesting is listening to a mega buck system, hearing something new in a tune I have listened to probably hundreds of times, coming home and having a listen on my meager system, and NOW hearing that same thing at home.

Funny how that awareness thing works!

I second Olson's thanks - cheers to Grumpy for organizing a very cool event, to Rob for hauling out his system, to John Wolfe for loading in the giant CARs, and to Martin Cooper, Wadia's National Sales Manager, for setting up a very cool second system and giving a great talk on digital audio.

I'd also like to thank Ernie for bringing in a bunch of his stuff all the way from Canada. You were extremely considerate to never once complain about not getting a chance to hook any of it up. Ernie, you're a paragon of patience and good will.

Thanks guys for all the effort on this one. A gigantic task with some spectacular results.

Jeff

Thanks to everyone, as well. Well worth the hour + drive to hear the two very good and highly contrasting systems.

I almost got grumpy to say that digital sounded good, i'll work harder next time.

Dave and Ernie, thanks, for the mini AKFest you put on for your S.M.A.C. brothers. The Sheraton will be a great venue for your 2010 show. It’s a shame you two never got a chance to sit down to enjoy the music.

Thanks also to John Wolfe and Martin Cooper, it was very educational to have one on one exposure to your knowledge and in depth understanding of musical systems. Rob; your one brave dude! Slugging all those wonderful tube pieces, a thousand feet of cable and that thirty three and a third, of bouncing candy, I hope they all made it back to your front room safely.

To the rest of you audioholics, was a pleasure getting my monthly fix with ya!

Yep, had a great time as well. Wish I could have stayed longer. Thanks Grump, Jeff, Ernie, Rob, and the other two guys from wich-y-call-it and what's-it's-name.

I had a great time, Jeff. I will say it was an adventure getting there. Seems every expressway was under construction. Between that and accident delays, well, it took a while to get there.

I thoroughly enjoyed Martin Cooper's presentation, and it was cool to watch Rob set up his Avid TT, and hear all that pretty gear on John's speakers.

Thanks for another great meeting.

Thanks to Grumpy, Rob, Jeff, Ernie, and the others who made the afternoon another pleasant day of good music and folks.

Had a great time myself, once the single malt showed up and the gear settled in and got good and warned up... and then it was all over! My, how time flies when you're having fun.

You guys are truly the best and that made it all worth the schlepping of the kit. I do have some mixed feeling about how it went though, I just wish we would have had more play time. Thanks to all those with bleeding ear drums who had the courage to venture back in on us from the cozy confines of the hallway or digital realm. I feel the tunes were getting pretty sweet right near the end.

Ernie, I'm so sorry we didn't get the Jolida integrated into the mix. Grumpy and I spoke of setting things up to accommodate and I was really looking forward to seeing (and hearing) it drive the classic audio behemoths, well.

Happy Listening! :beatnik: Viva Vinyl, tubes, and horns!
