Small Cabinet for 605A?

Should I replace the old caps in N-1600C? Currently, it sounds okay, but nowhere near my 19. I was expecting at least the same quality bass as 19. Any thoughts? After replacing the caps in the 19 crossover, there is quite a bit of improvement in sound quality.

The woofer section is similar to a
416 but not quite the same. It certainly would like a bigger box in my opinion. The 19’s dwarf your enclosure size.

The HF section is essentially an 806A. It’s not going to have any HF extension w/o some sort of EQ in the crossover similar to what the M19 does which allows you to turn down the mid frequency’s.

Have you taken the crossovers apart to look inside? Those are usually potted in tar.

I added the midrange filter circuit. Regarding bass, I think you are right that I need a bigger cabinet, but I have a space issue. I did not open the N-1600-C box.

Is the woofer runs open just with one capacitor in N-1600 C? I did not find any original schematic of N-1600-C.

@EarlK So my 605A has 8 ohm HF and 16 ohm LF. To connect to my MC275, does it matter if I use the 8-ohm speaker port or the 16-ohm one?

I am enjoying my 605A and Model 19 to the same degree. They sound a bit different, but both are just awesome. Midrange of 605A is unbeatable, HF of 19 is great, and in the bass department, they are going toe to toe, 19 has a little bit tighter bass and a bit more extension. Regarding imaging, hands off to 19! 605A imaging is also very good, but not to the same level as 19.

I have read and heard lots of things about 604! I have an honest question for all great Altec experts here. How much better sound will I get if I have 604? There are some boundary conditions. I have space limitation so 604-8G is out of contention (need a larger cabinet). I have seen 604E in a small cabinet like 614 or 612. I just don't want to acquire the Altec 604E for the sake of collecting it. How much better will it sound compared to my 605A and Model 19, assuming it will be in a 614 cabinet?
Any thoughts, opinions, or insights will be helpful.

I wouldn't expect the 604 to image any better than the 605 since they use the same horn ( in the 604c-604g ) >> and apart from the 604g in that grouping, the others use the same 20275 HF diaphragm ( in the original oem install ).

You're "imaging" challenges" are most likely related to the complex subject of room acoustics and speaker placement ( iow, you're going to need to move things around and experiment with placements ).

Additionally, MKP capacitors ( polypropylene ) are quicker and have better defined transients ( which will help imaging ).
- I'd recommend making completely new crossovers for your 605a's and I would expect somewhat better imaging from them once implemented.

Sadly, one hurdle is there is no reliable schematic ( that I can find ) for the n1600c ( which I believe is your model crossover ?? ).

You may need to chip out the brittle tar found in your crossover to get to the parts ( and then hopefully read the value of the caps inside those cardboard boxes, as well as measure the inductance of the single coil ).

Here are some pics obtained from this linked-to Japanese blog.

Here's how that box type comes apart;

Thank you very much for all of your insights. I am not overly concerned with the imaging, as it is quite good on its own. What I should have written in my previous post is that the sound stage is wider in 19, and it may be because they are now farther apart. As you suggested, I will play with the placement a bit more to improve it. Thanks a lot for the Japanese Blog!
Since I have an 8 ohm diaphragm, can I replace 1500-C with Jeff Markwart's crossover below, but keeping the midrange filter section exactly as we suggested before (that is now installed)?

The Markwart crossover is based on pure textbook values for a second order Butterworth filter and 16 ohm impedance. So, to calculate for an 8 ohm high frequency driver, C1 becomes 10uF and L1 becomes 1.25 mH.
