Small inexpensive bookshelf speakers

I'm on the hunt for a pair of small inexpensive bookshelf speakers for friend who is just getting into audio/vinyl. No amp yet but it will probably be some thing in the 30 - 50 W vintage range. Locally there are a pair of Paradigm mini monitors and KEF C20's for sale that I'm considering.

Any other suggestions on similar speaker I should keep an eye out for?

Or any experience with the Paradigms or KEF's?

For new speakers, consider the bookshelf models in Infinity's Primus lineup, especially the P153 (and earlier P150 and P152 - they're only cosmetically different). They're easy to drive and sound way better than their pricepoint might suggest.

What's your friends budget? How large is the listening space and the kind of music they listen to?

I have had more than one pair of Paradigm speakers that the glue failed allowing the surround to separate from the woofer. Easily fixed, but something to look out for.
KEF builds some well respected speakers but many believe the "C" series was not one of their best efforts. Accused of weak bass and rolled off highs, only your ears can decide if they are right for you.
IMHO the NHT Super Zero or SuperOne are tough to beat. Current versions are available for a reasonable price while used ones are an absolute bargain. YMMV

Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 is worth checking out. On sale now for under $300. They'll let you listen for 30 days.
