Small receiver recommendations?

Which low to medium (15-25w)power receiver would you suggest in the following brands: Yamaha, Pioneer, Sansui for a 12'x24' shop. Probably run bookshelf speakers such as Boston Acoustic 40s.

Know these are not brands you asked for but I'd suggest

Sony 6045

Yamaha CR-620 (35WPC) or CR-820 (55WPC), more watts but undervalued. Figure buck a watt more or less for most of those on CL unless gone through.

...imo the small Marantz receivers cant beat/compete any of the small sony receivers from the late 60s early 70s.
these sony`s are treasures (of understatement)- no lightened gimmicks.

happy hunting,

p.s.: sorry, the same for the small pioneers, yamahas, sansuis...

Really? I've owned both Sony's and Marantz.

I have a great Marantz 4220 beautiful sound , but the left rear cuts in and out sounds great on 2 channel though:music:

Broden your search and add Kenwood to your list. They made some fine BOTL receivers that did a fine job.
KR-3600-22wpc KR-4010-35wpc
KR-4600-30wpc KR-3090-27wpc
KR-4400-25wpc KR-5400-35wpc Just to mention a few.

Think a little outside the Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui etc box. Look for a Advent 300, one of the best low watt receivers ever.

To expand upon this recommendation I'd throw the KR-4140 out there. I have one and it's really sweet and musical, albeit ugly.

I took "English44's" original post as meaning physically small, and many of the 80's Kenwoods are just that. I have a KR-A20 in my basement fitness room and it's only 8-1/2" deep and weigh's just a few pound's. 40 watt's/channel down to 40hz, and just keeps hummin' along.

I agree with the Sansui 1000X suggestion. It's a BOTL that's not BOTL! It has a great tuner and loads of inputs with around 30 watts per side. Also agree with the Advent 300 suggestion. It is a spacesaver and has an amazing tuner. If I used it I would combine it with a SUB and small main speakers. A pair of Minimus Sevens and a little 8 inch SUB like the KLH units make for a great small countertop system. Just tuck the SUb somewhere out of sight. Good Luck! Franksta

so many good recommendations here. I have worked on many receivers. the Marantz 2230 is one of my favorites. Also the early Sony's sound very good also. As far as low power unit go marantz and sony made some nice ones. The pioneer build quality is also good, but I never found the sound to my taste. Kenwood seem to cut corners on their low power units.

Just my 2c worth…

Much thanks. I'm expecting a Marantz 2238B on Monday and already have a Sony STR-7055 which is extremely pleasant to listen to with Boston Acoustic A70s. Both did not cost a lot of money but I don't know if I could much improve without a big investment and I'm not sure if that's true either. I auditioned a very expensive system at a local shop and was really surprised at how thin it was compared to my setup.

I'm leaning toward a lower powered unit in excellent shape for a good price and I see a number around. Think I'll probably wind up with either a CR-620/640 Yamaha or a Pioneer SX-636/737 or perhaps a Sansui771 or a Sony 6045 or....{:-)

Thanks.
