Small speakers decision

I'm looking for a pair of smaller speakers for someone, and right now I've got the option on craigslist of either a pair of Klipsch KG2s or Advent Baby IIs. The trouble is, the KG2 tweeters have been replaced (the owner does not know by what), and the Advent woofers have been replaced by "Polk Audio woofers," I'm not sure of the model or quality. Which seems like the better option? The Klipsch are for $35 (seems like a steal...) and the Advents are $40. Thanks for the help!

I guess both would be a crap-shoot. I wouldn't spend if it were me. I would wait for a pair of speakers that I am more confident in.

You can buy a pair of KG2 tweeters for about $40 on the bay. The question here is if the cabinets were butchered in the process of replacing the tweets. The KG2s are usually worth around $100.

if you are paying the price for those brands/models, then they need to be original in spec.

Both of the replaced components are rather critical to those speakers sounding the way that they do. And it is THAT which makes them desirable.

Just spend about $100 and get the awesome Pioneer SP-BS22-LR's. They don't make a ton of bass obviously, but they sound excellent with very smooth frequency response and a very good midrange. They'll probably embarrass many small "vintage" speakers.

Great, thanks for the input, looking like a probable pass.

Out of curiosity, which of these speakers would be better in original condition?

Kg2 is much bigger so the sound but I won't use it for free.
Baby advents are decent and are too small for anything but small place.

Klipsch. I know advent sold a crapload of those things, but that doesn't necessarily equate to their quality. The Klipsch are the winners.

I know new Pioneer's get a "sneer" from the uninformed, but those speaker kick complete ass. I would not trade them for any Boston, Polk, Klipsch, etc bookshelf on the market.

I wouldn't consider the Kg2s small. If you're looking for a smaller, efficient speaker with a reasonable amount of bass and good imaging several of the Klipsch bookshelf speakers are very good. I've had the KSB 1.2, 1.3s and the B2s. The 1.2s and the B2s have 5.25" woofers. I believe they sound better balanced than the 1.3s.

I also have Scandyna Minipods, PSB Intros, NHT New Wave SAT 24s and Emotiva ERM1s. The Minipods are surprising good with good bass response. The ERM1s are more of a reference speaker and very revealing. the Intros and NHTs are satellites and don't have much bass. Of the group, I'd recommend the B2 first. They are very reasonably priced (I found three different pairs for $125 or less), have good build quality and sound great.
