small tear in 15" woofer surround--repair???

Hi everyone....I have a small tear in a 15" woofer. The tear is in the foam surround and is about 1 in. long and 1/4" wide, rest of the foam is fine. Can I just glue a small patch over this tear??? If so what specific adhesive should I use on the delicate foam. (Don't know if it makes any difference but the woofer is in a ported cabinet.) Thanks for any help !!!!

How old is the driver? Maybe the surround is rotting. If it is <15 years you are probably fine doing a patch. Any flexible drying white glue works.

Glue the patch under the tear. That's the direction the pressure comes from.

Just tried that with a smaller hole. Seems to work. Used Seal-All cement since I had it. Dries flexible, sticks quick.

Pics show patch (cut out from surround of junk speaker), and from the front the hole (still small, but it was getting larger, so it was time to act).

<..> small tear <..> is about 1 in. long and 1/4" wide, rest of the foam is fine.

By 1/4" wide do you mean part of it is now missing right? How old is the speaker? Seriously think about putting a new foam surround on it.

In the mean time you can patch it. Without seeing it mind you, this is what I'd do (mainly because I have some scrap pieces of surround handy): cut a nice clean shape where the tear is. Cut a piece is similar surround material to fit perfectly in that shape. Use a thin rubber cement on only the butt edge where the hole is and the patch, glue that in per the adhesive instructions. Then go back after that's dry and put a couple thin coats of liquid latex or Alenes Tacky glue on the back side of the surround to add a bit strength to the patch. I doubt you would need more to keep it secure but if you do add some scrim material like thin nylon (womens hose material), just lay it into the wet tacky glue on the back side. I would think a 15" woofer is going to be pretty forgiving with a patch that size using similar foam material.

Once foam surrounds have torn it is only a matter of time before they disintegrate. Time to put new surrounds on.

Thanks a lot for the excellent ideas. This has got to be one of the most helpful groups around !!!! The speakers were refoamed about 6 yrs ago according to the former owner. This tear looks kind of like the foam was "pinched" or something and a 1/4 inch wide piece is missing. I'll try using the patch and see how it goes. I have a pair of CV 12" woofers that have to be completely refoamed--anyone know a good repair guy in the DFW area?? Thanks again for the help...
