Ooops! The first time I wrote the title for this post, I actually mis-typed it as "Shagged a Marantz..." Burst out laughing when I noticed that (it was a genuine typo/mistake!). Corrected it, but thought I'd share the error here, anyway.
THE SHORT VERSION:
I bought a Marantz 300dc power amp today at a wholesale outlet here in Hong Kong, for approx. US$100.
THE FULL STORY:
Today I was going around the wholesale places here in Hong Kong and almost passed by one place without going in. It was a place that rarely has much I'd be interested in, and I was getting hungry to go eat lunch instead. Sure glad now that I didn't skip it.
I went in, didn't see much, then just as I was turning to leave I instinctively took another look at a section in the very back. Hhhmmm, something was sitting on the floor turned sideways against a piece of BPC so I could hardly see it, but it seemed to have a silver front and knobs ... I went over, turned it so I could see the face, and found two nice big meter-eyes looking back at me, above a little black "DC" mouth. It's a Marantz 300DC!
I started looking at it...DC, so heavy I nearly got a hernia turning it over, with a MASSIVE round transformer, big caps, etc... No doubt left that I wanted this one , I asked the price, and the guy said $100. I just bought it without haggling or taking time to think about it first ("you snooze, you lose"). When I double-checked the specs and price range for this beast on the net later in the day, I really KNEW that I did the right thing snagging it!
The face-plate is nearly immaculate. There is just one small area near the power button that has faint, tiny scratches, almost like someone used their fingernail to remove something stuck there, and scratched the coating. You can only see it at certain angles and/or up close. I'm not sure, but it might "disappear" entirely if I put a coat of protective wax over the face. I can live with that, no problem.
The case, however, is another story: someone painted over it with what looks like cheap semi-gloss spray paint.
:nono: I'll prep it and re-paint it with the recommended (on AK, of course) hammered Rustoleum paint.
Yesterday I got an excellent 2275 in wooden case (for 200 bucks), and today this 300dc. Sure is a good Marantz week for me - I'm psyched!
:scratch2: Guess I'll have to hunt down a matching tuner and pre now, huh?!. I know where a couple are in retail outlets, but they are too expensive in those places. I'll be patient until the next one appears on the cheaper end of the market. I think a 5020 cassette deck (I have a couple) will match well, with those colored meters, so I'll use that with what will become a Marantz separates stack. I will almost certainly sell some of my lesser-powered 22XX receivers now, to recover the costs of these latest purchases and create a "war chest" for a tuner and pre-amp. I can part with a couple of those (not without "pain", but I can...) but this amp seems more of a "keeper" to me, even before I've heard it.
Just wanted to share this find.
