Snell Type D Speakers

I have the opportunity to buy a pair of Snell Type D speakers from the original owner for $300.00.

They are in amazing condition.

I listen to vinyl and CDs, mostly jazz, rock, reggae, and classical. I would place these speakers in my family room.

Have two questions:

1.) Could someone share their experience owning these speakers? How were they?

2.) I have a Sansui AU-X701 amplifier (100 watts). Will this be enough to run these speakers to their full potential? The power rating in watts is 15-150. The frequency response is 39 Hz-22 kHz.

I haven't heard that particular model, but I have heard a couple of others and they were really good. I don't think you can go wrong if they're in good condition. $300 seems pretty reasonable. Your amp should work fine as long as you don't try to blow the windows out. The Type D's impedance drops below 4 ohms at about 90Hz.

I’ve owned several Snell models. Great speakers. Your price is extremely good.
They like power. Also make sure whatever you power them with can handle 4 ohms.

I really enjoy my Snell Type D's. I only wish I had the room to leave them out full-time. I think your amp at 100 wpc is quite adequate but of course more is better. I'm using a Van Alstine 225 wpc amp and a tube pre-amp and they sound wonderful, what every genre I'm playing.

$300 is a steal if they are fully functional and look good. Run, don't walk, to buy these speakers ! If you decide not to buy them, please let me know!
 
My neighbor in Tokyo had a pair of Snell speakers, maybe the Ds, back in the late 80s. As I recall, they were pretty good, and were able to deliver low bass cleanly at loud volume.
 
Have owned most of the snell line from that era. The D's are pretty nice speakers. Like almost all of the snells they like a lot of power. 250 a channel with high current capabilities comes to mind. They will sound good with 100 watts but will open up with more current. 300 is a pretty good price for them if all the drivers are in good shape.
If you like them with your Sansui amp, you may want to consider looking for a Parasound 2200 MK2, Threshold S500, Krell MDAs etc to drive them.
