Snell Type D Speakers

Hi all...

I am contemplating purchasing Snell Type D speakers locally. I know little about them, and have been unsuccessful finding information online, other than general Snell tidbits, and reviews of speakers not the type D (Mostly E, K, etc.). Does anyone have knowledge of these speakers, or know a link that would give me a manual, or specs on it?

Also, the speaker has a blown tweeter. I'm not sure how easy it would be to find a new tweeter and replace it? Comments?

Thanks so much, in advance.

A google search might lead to a craigslist post. The snell acoustics website once had information about older products. Found this in Audiokarma: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5161. Check here too: http://www.audioreview.com/cat/spea...ll-acoustics/type-div/PRD_121067_1594crx.aspx.

I auditioned a pair in the mid 1990s. I found them to have top notch fit and finish, excellent veneer and very good drivers. They were relatively efficient. I purchased the step up - the CV. I still have them and can't imagine selling. I find Snell speakers of that vintage were very highly regarded and well made. For under $800 I would definitely audition.

I purchased a replacement set of tweeters from Snell three years ago as a backup. Contact Snell to see if they have parts for the D.

Good luck.

Thanks for the links everyone...

I did search Snell here and found both that link and the audioreview link (Not sure I put much credibility in that website). The second two, it seemed that the D was left out. It lists that they are 150watts max into 8 ohms, and "More to come", and there is not one posting in the snell forum. I would be using these in lieu of SDA 1C's, which, I believe, are 400 watts into 6 ohms. I'm not sure if it will be that much of a difference, and of course I know that stats aren't everything.

Anyone have personal experience with these speakers that can comment?

Also, any comments on the tweeter in the back of the speaker? What the heck is the purpose of that??? :)

I auditioned them. See my post. My current Snell CVs have the rear tweeter. Don't know it's purpose.

Before you do anything drastic about the tweeter, pull it out and make sure both leads are connected. That's what happened to mine, they were just press-fitted.
They go crazy low for an 8" woofer. In fact they seemed to do everything well, except to make me love them. There was something about them that just would not let me want to listen to them for any prolonged length of time. Maybe it was the synergy (or lack of it) with my existing system. Most people are crazy about them, so don't let me rain on your parade. My ears ain't your ears. (Lucky you!) ; )
