So damn mad and nobody knows anything!!

Got up this morning and needed to make a call. Went to get the phone and right away this caught my eye. My beloved Polk RTA 11T with water damage!
These speakers were in fantastic condition, not a mark and I always take care of them. I checked to see if the ceiling was leaking and its not. Somebody either placed a wet rag on it or a glass that must have sweat, either way the damage is done and I am pissed. Asked everyone in the house and all I got was "don't know what happened"
My problem is I am OCD and it is my problem, I understand that but I am a fanatic when it comes to the condition of my gear. To me speakers do not just have to sound good they need to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye to be one with a system, again my OCD here talking. These Polks now have to go, I will always be drawn to the damage.

Yea I have had a rough go with some of my equipment recently...can be discouraging.

you'll survive it, do what you got to do

WTF is "somebody" - do you live with children, parents, roommates?

So, how will you find out the guilty party?

Somebody did something and now they must die - jk - not really.

My luck, mo matter what I buy, new bike, tv, stereo gear by the time I get it home I damage it, scratch paint whatever. used to make me physically ill but after many years of dissapointment iv'e come to accept I can't take care of anything no matter how hard I try. The upside is most used gear I buy is in better shape than my new gear.

I'm with Heather! Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out... that way you can listen to music in peace and not have people screwing things up!

And yes, I too am kidding! Sort of... ;)

You need Abby from CSI to identify the guilty party. Actually, I don't see any ring from a glass, and it would take one very wet rag for a long time to do that kind of damage. IMO, there's a possibility that something entirely different happened, and everybody is telling the truth. One time I came home to two blown tweeters and was sure somebody cranked the system. It turned out they had a manufacturing defect and simply went open after a period of non-use. In fact, almost every time I think I've been wronged by somebody, that somebody turns out to be mother nature or even me!

Do you have any clamps?

If still a bit damp clamp it with blocks of wood both directions and it could just dry out perfect again. You can also rewet it again just a bit.

I agree with the last 2 posts, no signs of water damage, maybe it's too dry in your house, wood may have cracked. It is strange looking though, maybe somebody picked it up and dropped it! lol jk

Maybe a manufacturing flaw, not enough glue at the seam and finally gave way. Call or email Polk to see if this is a problem with this model.

Swollen corner joint "pop", and water stained veneer sure looks like water damage to me.

I'm with the OP, while i might try to effect a repair, they're going down the road. Only then could my anger/disappointment fade away.

For some of us, being disrespected in our own home is an issue not taken lightly. That's not just a damaged speaker, it's owner has been blatantly disrespected, perhaps by a family member or "loved one".

These can be sealed back into place from the looks of the pictures . Applying wood glue as far back as you can into the cracks . Clamps and 2x4 with patients you wouldn't notice anything (repairs ) that you made . Are these near a heat source?

Ah, the benefits of fallaparticle board. I feel your pain.:tears:

Agreed, this is the particleboard material that has expanded with the absorption of water. I've seen it before not only on speakers but other furniture. There is a lot of difference in the binding materials used to make particleboard and this will account for what happens to it.

Odds are there are other spots if you look hard enough. Not sure what to recommend to do about it, too. Its gonna happen more to some speakers than others, I suspect depending on the quality of the materials used during production.

Again, this isn't a speaker model, brand, or even an audio industry problem. Talk to any good furniture maker about their experiences with particle board materials.

Cheers,

David
