So I have an upgrade question

And I don’t want to interfere with zappafan2
Hey no worries 7.62 always enjoy following your post and appreciate your knowledge on classic Infinity, good luck with everything and wish you nothing but the best brother:thumbsup: A pair of Renaissance 80s on the bay now, looks like pretty good shape except where someone changed one set of binding posts. The seller does take returns and best offers and has a great ebay rating, if anyone has time some thoughts would be appreciated.

It seems most everyone is recommending the Kappas, found a beautiful set of 8.1s in NC on US audio mart but I would have to hope my uncle In Charlotte would make the 2 hour drive to check out and purchase and thats a lot to ask but I think he may be good with it.

they can be quite close to the

What CDELON wrote in post #6.

(mis)judged the size of your room
So I hope you guys have time to take a look at these Rens on the bay, they are being sold by alfa 164. I have contacted him and can get them delivered for $1100 with a 30 day return policy, he has fired them up and says all is great, my only concern might be the binding post job, I would value all your input

I see two sets of Ren 80s on eBay currently both at $1200, one free shipping(St. Petersburg, Fl) and one free local pickup(Orlando, FL). I'm in Tampa, 45 minutes to St. Pete and 1 hour or more to Orlando depending on where and traffic. Just FYI we have a hurricane heading our way this weekend.

I see what you mean about the one rear binding post/foot. Looks like it was cracked and glued back together.

There is also a set of Ren 90s on CL near me in St. Cloud, Fl, Just south of Orlando. No affiliation to sale/seller. Seller is asking $900 but ad has been up for a while.

Yes the one in St.Pete and that glued in piece is what concerns me, that is why I am asking all your opinions. Maybe I should wait for a better pair or maybe that repair is not a big deal, again I appreciate all your guys opinions and suggestions.

It’s hard to see the repair in the pics, I’d say go for it, the most important thing is those drivers being in good shape. You may incorporate a sub and really enjoy those.

I’ve tried to avoid this, unfortunately I’m having terrible issues with the lower back and tremendous pain issues. I’ve had to sell of a majority of my gear and have almost sold the 4.5’s 3 times. For some reason I can’t let them go. I offered Jazzman a trade but I’m still not sure if I can do it. He’s the only one I trust that wouldn’t part them out.

So I need a risky operation that has a 50% chance of paralysis from the waist down, until then monthly doctor visits and a steady diet of morphine and other heavy stuff is expensive. I should have shot a video while I had them bi-amped briefly, Glorious Sound is all I can say. So the reality is I will end up keeping them but it’s going to be some time before I can replace the gear to properly power them and shoot a video I feel will be worthy of posting.

And I don’t want to interfere with zappafan2’s thread, so please out of respect let this be.

So sorry to hear about your pain issues. Hope u have a speedy recovery. As always our health is the most important. Things can be replaced but your health can’t what my mom always says to me. I have never heard a pair of Rens but I know the guys here speak of them highly. I was chasing a set last year the 90s but the guy wanted way to much. I’m pretty happy with my setups now. I think my next pairs will be bookshelf types as I get closer to my golden years. Lol

Well I went for it, Ren 80's will be here next week, so stoked to get them set up good and put some listening time in. Thanks for everyones time and opinions, so many good speakers to choose from. Maybe in time a pair of Kappas will be here to compare lol my McIntosh amp and pre will be my next purchase, still a ways off lol

When you get them update us with the setup and let us know what you think of them.

Sorry I missed this thread 'til now,

I'd have suggested any of the aforementioned speakers,

ren 90
RS IIb,
RS II,

Kappa 8.1 (these would have been the most 'rock and roll' of all the options)
Since you've already decided, I'd only say;
You may find a subwoofer useful, I do admit I use one on my ren 80s in my bedroom, and they sound fantastic. The quality of bass with the 80s is fantastic, but there isn't quite as much 'impact' as some would expect. mids and highs are glorious, the best I've heard personally.

Currently, my main room speakers are the mighty RS IIb again, usually used in conjunction with the Magnepan 2.5R (I know, I know, but they just sound so damn good together!) and I also have a pair of rs 4b in there. the rens are far superior to the RS 4b, good as they are. I can only imagine more so with the 5b, with the smaller woofers.

Good luck!

Good luck!
Thanks Jazz, I am really hoping they work out well in my space my musical taste are so varied may miss a little slam on say Zeppelin but I am really hoping the difference with say Miles Davis or some Zappa make up for it all. I can honestly see my self getting some Kappas as well maybe down the road, It is going to take some time to listen to different genres and play with my speaker placement to reach my conclusions. Hopefully it all works out ok, listen to lots of live Dead as well so we will see keeping my fingers crossed I made a wise choice.

IMG_1182.jpg Just got them today arrived safely, they look great even better than pics showed very happy. I have lots of listening to do but 1st listen Zappa Apostrophe I am super happy, big sound, speakers already seem to just disappear in my room and just a quick basic placement, going to need some time with these but out of box yep I am very happy.:jump:
