So today I learned (on a Yamaha M-60)

Been working on getting a blown up Yamaha M-60 up and running after another shop butchered it. Fairly easily got the amp section all worked out as I've done a few now and it's pretty much always been the same parts blown in each.

This one, though, was probably the 2nd worst I've seen from a butchering standpoint as it was missing transistors.

But anyway, onto the main thing I learned, apparently TO-3P packages can fail as a short between the collector and the screw hole. I guess the plastic isolation isn't that thick, but it's just a bizarre thing to see. I had gotten everything sorted out, popped on the DBT and had a nice bright light. After messing around for a bit I thought I just had a short at my insulator since it is possible to accidentally screw through them with the metal screws Yamaha used. After I thought I had it sorted out and no more bright DBT it was time for full power.

Unit worked nicely for about an hour unit I heard a nice pop and saw a decent amount of smoke. Transistor had shorted from rail to chassis... Upon testing the transistor actually still tested good, but when mounted to the unit it it was showing a dead short. Decided to test the screw hole for continuity and found that it was a short from collector to screw on one side of the hole. One other transistor in the power supply section was behaving similarly, and upon testing I found it also had a partial isolation failure.

I guess I got extremely lucky because nothing actually blew from the short, (or maybe that's just how it is since the collector is the input voltage).

But anyway, I guess my lesson is that I shouldn't trust that a TO-3P transistor that tests good but was messed with by someone else is still good. Goes to show you never know what kind of history the unit you're dealing with has.

Possibly over torqueing the screws.at one time or another. ?

My guess is that the last shop used a drill on them, or that they used the wrong diameter screw at some point before putting them back in the unit. Definitely the most bizarre failure I've seen thus far...

Im beginning to suspect a faulty batch of Sanken transistors went into this unit, thus far 4 with the same date code have failed with the exact same failure method of a short through the screw hole. The outputs have the same code, but they're a different gain range so I can see why theyd be unaffected.

Had this thing on the mains when my lights dimmed and I looked over and saw smoke. Took out a rectifier with it... All the failed ones have had the same 56Y date code.

Had they all failed in the same physical location on the heatsink ? Were they all NPN's ? What brand of heatsink compound are you using ?

All failed in a similar location on the transistor, through where the screw goes through the package, can actually test and get continuity inside the hole on the transistors. Its been 3 NPN and 1 PNP, same 56Y Date code, the new replacement transistors I have (2sc3856 and 2sa1492) in the same locations work perfectly with no signs of short. Ther thermal grease is Arctic MX-4, this is the non-conductive and non-metallic paste that I use for about everything as it works well and isnt super pricey.
 
Maybe they are counterfeit replacements good pick up none the less!

I suspected that initially but I popped one open and the die size looked to be correct, I actually had a fake here too from a guy who brought some in with his unit and it used a visibly smaller die in the package.

Does make me wonder though.
 
Where were these purchased ?

These were in the unit, with very clear factory paste application and soldering.

No clue where my bag of fakes came from though, were included with a lot I bought a while back with a nuked M-60, took about 30 seconds to tell.
 
These are fun amps to work on, aren't they?

There's a frisson of danger of spectacularly exploding parts which just isn't there on the smallish receivers I have been playing with so far... :D

Your thread made me check for continuity after replacing the factory TIM on my M-65, thank you for the timely reminder. :thumbsup:
