Software for converting LPs to digital files?

I have all the hardware required to convert LPs to digital files. Am wondering what software to use for the recording process? Signal chain will be:

1. H-K T30C turntable
2. Rogue Perseus tube preamp using 2nd set of line level outputs
3. TASCAM US-144 USB 2.0 audio interface
4. USB 2.0 connection to PC

EDIT -- Am wondering is I instead could plug the TT directly into the TASCAM unit? The TASCAM manual says I need to use a phono preamp. -- EDIT

The TASCAM unit came with Cubase LE software (if I can find it). Could this software be used for LP conversion.

With the software I noted, I was referring specifically to the idea of recording vinyl without a preamp.
 
Thanks. I've downloaded Audacity and am now trying to figure out how to use it. I have audio from the TT into the TASCAM unit. Can't see that I have a signal going to the Audacity software yet though.
 
I found the Preferences menu under the EDIT. Was able to get a stereo signal going to the PC now. Am trying to record Steely Dan - Aja as an experiment now.
 
Well.....I recorded the A side of Aja and played it back via iTunes. Sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks singing. Recorded the file at 24/96. Anybody got any ideas why it sounds funny?

A Rogue Perseus preamp, which includes a tube phono preamp.

I downloaded Media Monkey and the file sounds the same.....like it is playing at double speed. So, it is not a player problem I guess.
 
I have my Audacity on my other computer which has a virus so I can't access the program. How does it sound through your computer speakers while it's recording? If it sounds the same there might be a setting you need to change. If not it might be a problem with how the file is getting converted.

Can you try playing the file before you transfer it to i-tunes? What type of file did you record it to? Try playing it back with another music program like windows media player.
 
There is a play button specifically for speed adjustment playback, but I'm assuming you're not using it. I've never had your problem. Are you sure your soundcard can handle 24/96 playback? Try 44100 hz, or whatever CD is, and see what happens. Does it play OK with Audacity? You can use it to play the files.
 
Audacity is great, soundwise, but I just can't get around to splitting the file into tracks (setting track markers).

I used to run Audio Cleaning Lab 3.0 on my Windows based laptop and it worked fine, plus you could clean up the file with the different filters.
 
Vinyl Studio is very easy to use, has a free trial of 5 recordings, very compatible, and sounds good. Try the link skriefal provided.

OK, so here's the deal. I did the first recording at 96 Hz sampling rate. Audacity exports at 44.1 Hz CD sampling rate. This resulted in the Alvin and the Chipmunks sounding files. When I lowered the recording sampling rate to 44.1 Hz, the recordings sound find when exported to WAV files.

Audacity evidently can't export 24/96 quality files. If someone knows how to do this, let me know.

Also the player software has to recognise the 96k sample rate and adjust accordingly, including the driver for your sound card. Otherwise it sounds like chipmunks.

Have you played back 96k files on your set up before?

I can't see how to increase the export format to 96k in Audacity free version.

I've played DVD-audio disks on this PC before, am playing the King Crimson 40th anniversary 24/96 mix of "In the Court of the Crimson King" now. Can't tell if Windows Media Player is down-sampling the disk though. Guess I need to reinstall the SoundBlaster Audigy 4 software to see how the soundcard is configured.
