Solar eclipse photos... anybody got tips & tricks?

I was thinking about driving down to St. Joe ,Missouri for the eclipes.
 
I'm headed up to Oregon.

Here is a 18 shot composite from the 2012 Eclipse. Near the bottom it gets fuzzy as it approached a hazy horizon with clouds. I used the glass from a welder's mask.

Same 2012 eclipse. We were at Lake Shasta in northern California.

Don't just concentrate on the eclipse. As it got darker, the temperature dropped, the birds stopped singing, the landscape and light got eerie.

Here is one from earlier in the day. As we tested out our custom cereal box eclipse viewers. lol! 2 layers of gold mylar from Tap Plastics. My friend Ralph's idea. He works with NASA and on the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO). A lot of the Youtube video's of the Sun he has posted.

Somewhat related. The 2012 Venus transit. We were geeking out at Lockheed Martin's parking lot at Ralph's lab. Couple of the scientists had hydrogen alpha telescopes (red filter). I used an iPhone to take the photo. The black dot is Venus and to the left those bumps are solar flares. Hard to see the sun spots.

I watched that Venus transit for a while on top of the building were I worked at.Used one of those digitally controlled welding masks with the shading cranked to the max.

Isn't this stuff cool? Venus is around 150,000,000 miles from here. Different perspective. It's not just a bright light in the night sky and you can see it move across the sun.

Transits comes in pairs. Next set, 10–11 December 2117, and 8 December 2125

We will be headed to Lake Murray SC. We have relatives there with a lake house. Plan is to watch the show out on the lake. The eclipse center will pass directly overhead. What are the freaking odds? Wherever you are going, I would suggest getting there early. I expect once this thing gets more coverage there will be a crush of folks hopping in the car to get a better view. The interstates along the path will flooded with cars that will pull off the road where the center will pass. I envision the early Space Shuttle launches. What a mess. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event for many, many millions of people.

August afternoon in SC. Very unlikely to be clear. Maybe we need a backup location?

We have an option up in the mountains South of Franklin NC. The weather may be more hospitable there.
