soldering station advice please

Hakko is the right answer, the iron fits the hand better, the cord is never an issue, and the dang thing does what it's supposed to.

For those hard to solder ground planes ...

wanders , i can't recommend the hakko 888 http://www.frys.com/product/6508443?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG highly enough .

the cord is no stiffer than a freshly cooked noodle . the stand is cast metal and waaay better than any of the spiral spring looking things . the transformer weighs a couple of pounds ( beefy ) .

yes it looks like gumby made it , but i guaranty you will not be disappointed .

cheers Woody

I ordered this one yesterday. Around $80 w/ free shipping. Comes with one chisel tip; I bought a conical for desoldering. (Maybe my RS tips wii fit, they look rhe same in the pics).

Got stuck with Cal. tax, h'ever. Around $90 total. I'll post a report after it arrives. Thanks for the reviews.

I think I'm going to order the Hakko. I too am using radio shack iron and the tips don't last very long.

Any thoughts on heated desoldering units with the bulb or vac?

Hi everyone...sorry for the late reply to this thread - we need to stay more "in-tune" with what the members here are up to :music: We were introduced at AKFest this year and thought it about time we raised our ugly heads here in the forum

If the members here need anything related to soldering or components - from MOSFETs to Hakko, solder to tools, give us a call @ (800) 458-6053, or check out our site www.bdenterprisesinc.com - we support AK.org and look forward to providing the members with superior support and service for years to come.

For starters, we'll provide a 10% member discount if you say you know us from AKFest '12 - an FX888 for instance would be $76 with free shipping. We will have our site set-up shortly with a code for the 10% off - with SPECIALS (beyond the 10%) on a weekly and monthly basis for the members here. We carry the complete line of Hakko for instance, everything is in stock from stations (hundreds in the warehouse) to tips and tools, and 35+ years of experience with electronics, building and repair. We're here if you need us.

It was great meeting everyone at the show.

wow Dean , at first i thought this was going to be another dealer spam post , but $76 for an 888 shipped is an awesome price for an excellent iron !

hows about a quote to answer JohninCt for a hakko 808 desoldering gun kit .

when i finally sprang for one and used it for the first time it was OMG !!!!! why did i wait so long ?

cheers Woody

i use a weller bog standard iron . good tip here don't forget to unplug it after use or the tip will be much shorter next time you use it .
some boards are just bad and the traces will lift if not extra careful with them .

I use one that looks like the Stahl. I'll bet it's made by the same company. Digital readout and chisel point. No complaints. The Hakkos look like kid's toys to me i think due to the colors more than the design. Love to have one though.

While I agree that the new Hakko look does look toyish, they are professional tools of the very best quality. The new look did shock me, though.

I've used Ungar, Weller (lot's), Oryx, Wahl, Pace, Radio Shack, Tenma, and yes even Metcal and the Hakko is my favorite.

Still using my >25 year old Hakko 926. It's battered, but still never broke down, heats up as fast as day one.

My Hakko 888 arrived yesterday. Haven't had a chance to do any more than just fiddle around, but it seems like a serious, well made soldering station.

Observation: The side of the box has one of those panels with check boxes so you know what color unit is inside. The choices were:

1) Black
2) Silver
3) Red
4) Blue/Yellow

Can you guess what box was checked? What marketing genius decided that US consumers would prefer Door #4, I wonder.

My late, lamented, Unger soldering iron is about to be laid to rest, as my new Hakko 888 arrived yesterday.

Best Regards,
TerryO

Hey Terry,

Trivia: Did you know that Tonegen and Ungar shared their sales offices and reps for many years? I have no idea what the underlying connection was.

"Bakku"? Where have I heard that name from before? :scratch2: It kinda' reminds of another name. "Bakku", "Bakku". It reminds me of something.

Hi Ken,

I certainly didn't know that and like you, I can't see what the connection might be either. I suppose it's possible that the owners, or whomever, might have been related.

Thanks for the Information,
"Trivahound" TerryO
