Solved: Denon DR-M07 Gear replacement and no RW

I have this lovely little Denon deck and last night replaced the gear that is a well known failure point. It’s now playing and FF just fine but will not RW. It engages when RW is pressed but the reels don’t spin. Is anyone familiar with this transport (my understanding is that it’s a Panasonic/Technics mechanism) and know if there is something that drives RW that could be amiss?

Slick idler tire?? I am unfamiliar with the drive on this, but I find idler tires are a constant failure point

First, I don’t think this deck has an idler tire. It has the gear that I replaced instead.

Second, it looks like I solved this. In checking the belts the smaller belt in the photo below was clearly slipping when RW was engaged with a tape in place but would work with no tape/resistance. So I opened the mechanism and replaced the belt and it’s now working.

Kia Ora,

What's the 'name' of this gear?

I have the same issue - and will probably need to replace it. I've got the service manual but can't seem to find the part number.

Also - where did you get your replacement - it looks a lot better than the original!

Hi there, I have the same problem with the broken gear here. Could you please give me a hint where you did get your replacement gear from? Thanks, Joz

I’m fairly certain I got it on eBay. It’s the same gear that’s in some other Technics decks as well. I probably bought a set of 2 gears and then misplaced the other.

I haven’t been using this deck lately but I’ll pull it out of the pile again soon to see how it’s doing.
