Some idiot left an Eico on my doorstep!

RIP 1961-2018
Actually it was our very own "Special" idiot. Beautiful amp, and somebody has made a case for it. SI will pop in with a good pic I'm sure. I'm just going over it with a fine tooth comb and tring to improve the phono section some. I put a special set of RCAs on back so he won't have to ever wiggle. One is phono, 2 is aux1, and 3 is aux 2. Should finish it tomight if I have the parts for the phono in stock, and I should. I've been running it every now and then to catch some volt readings and such and this m*ther f*cker sounds nice. Much livlier and detailed then the Fishers I've heard, and a bit more balanced than my fav, the Sherwood. And that's with all new production tubes. I know there's one going on my short list.

Hey, here's a little tip if you use those gold plated RCAs we all like. After you're all done hokking and mounting them up, solder all the peieces together. The nut, the washer thing wgere the ground hoofs up, etc..... One thing it gets you is a connection that outlasy your children, and you never have to deal with a pot twistening behind a knob again. Man I hate that.:thumbsdn:

Rock On:music:

Nice! The word is out on those amps so they are in high demand.

That is a sweet amp for sure! Love the case as well and one of my favorite builds.

I'm really liking my ST-40 with it's 7591's but those 6BQ5's are calling to me.

I luvs mine (except for its deeply-ingrained hum).
They actually deserve some of the cachet they acquired courtesy of Kelly Holsten's website and that dang Stereophile article a few years back.

Hmmm, this one is quiet as a mouse, but I went to a star grounding system.

What are those kind of square brown caps shown in the third picture on the underside of the chassis? I've got some in an amp and I don't know who the vendor is.

Since there was a mention of the ST-40. Has anyone compared the ST-40 to the HF-81? What caliber is the ST-40? I am a little clueless as to why they don't fetch the money or interest an HF-81 does. My ST-40s sound better than many tube amps I own. Just curious as the ST-40 seems to be one of the real sleepers around.

Possibly because there's not been a recent stereo magazine article with a glowing review for the ST-40 (if there has, please correct me; I'd love to read it). Thankfully, the masses follow the reviews and prices of reviewed equipment such as HF-81, Fisher 500-C/800-C/400 prices rocket whilst we can still pick up the sleepers at a relative bargain. :thmbsp: Add to that the fact that these are not necessarily the cutest amps out there and, as with other things in life, for some reason some pick looks over performance. :dunno:

I got ya. IMHO though....the HF-81 isn't a real stunner looks wise either. Fisher OTOH is gorgeous gear and I definitely SEE why it has a following.

Heven't even had the nerve to plug my ST-40 in yet (because I found it on the scrap metal pile at our dump); I'll get back to you on this.

That said, however... all things being equal, I tend to prefer the sound of EL84 PP amps to 7591 PP amps.
