I have been having a problem with a Dual 505/Ortofon 5E due to noise and/or signal failure on one channel. Initially I thought it was a fault in the (just repaired) NAD 3140 amp Or a speaker connection, but when playing a tape on a Kenwood deck all was well. There may be a cable or head-shell mount problem on the Dual. I'll check the wiring and connections before trying it again
Then I plugged a Silcron turntable with a Sansui cartridge into the NAD. It was really interesting that not only did the Silcron perform perfectly on both channels, without any noise, but the overall sound was much brighter and cleaner than on the Dual
Initially, I thought the Silcron turntable was running over speed. I was playing Pinchas Zuckerman's first recorded performance of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto and it was incredibly fast, but the actual pitch of the sound was OK.so it was the actual performance being played at an astounding pace. To prove the point, I then played the Haydn "Surprise" symphony on the Silcron - this is a recording/performance I know well. The speed was fine but again, much clearer and brighter sound that the Dual
I may take the Silcron over to the house to compare it with the Thorens TD160 Mk1 fitted with a
Stanton 681EEE cartridge that I regard as ideal for the kind of music I play. An interesting exercise!
