Some unexpected acquisitions...

I answered an ad for a Technics SA-700. I have been wanting a powerful reciever. The $100 price almost scared me away, but it was supposed to be working, and it was close by so I went to see it. The guy that had it said he lost interest in this stuff when he quit drinking. So I came home with

Sansui 2000x (nice case)
Sansui 4000 (nice wooden case, the only thing I've plugged in so far, all lights and functions work, but weak in one channel)
Sansui 551
Sansui 500 (This is looker!)
Sansui 6060 (So is this)
Marantz 4240
Technics SA-700

I am overwhelmed, but I suppose I'll keep the Sansui that I like the best.

Ah, so you were the one who snagged that stuff!

Me and HomerJSimpson were working on trying to drive down there to get that stuff. Glad it went to a fellow AK'er. Bit of a long drive from Raleigh...Lemme know if you feel like parting with the Sansui 500...:D
Congrats!

When he quit? I would have expected him to lose interest when he started! :D

An update on these finds...

I've finally worked through all this stuff. I made up my mind not to do too much, since I really don't know how anyway, just fuses and cleaning pots mostly.

Technics (by Pioneer) SA-700: Protection comes on. Just not my style. I trhink I'll give it away.

Marantz 4240: Works, need some lamps and cleaning. I think I know someone who wants it.

Sansui 551: Came alive without any work. I sold it along with a Marantz 2015 to a guy who thougt he wanted the Marantz, but I think he might like the 551better

Sansui 2000x: All lights and controls work, but the tuning string is broken or off track. I haven't opened it to see. I might make an exception to the fuses and cleaning rule as this is a very pretty receiver.

Sansui 4000: I fixed this one up first. I had a shootout over the weekend between the 4000 and my Marantz 2230. I'm still trying to decide, but this is a very nice looking piece with it's green lights and walnut case, and it opens up my Spendor L3/5's in a way that the Marantz doesn't. 45 watts vs. 30 watts may be what's going on.

Sansui 6060: Came alive with new fuses. I like the way it sounds. I will probably have to decide between it and the 4000 for a keeper.

Sansui 500: This one has tubes. A lot of them. I had a guy bring it up on a variac for me, and everything works. He says it needs new coupling capacitors, and referred me to a guy who can work on it. I am excited about this one, because it's so old. I have some Heresy speakers I am collecting parts for that I want to try it with when I get it fixed up.

Hmmm.. Wonder if the reason for having the inventory is that the pub was right next door to the audio shop and he kept going in for seconds.

Nice group of units, no dog in the bunch by any measure.

The 551 and the 4000x Sansuis would be on my keeper pile. Not familiar with the 500 but remember seeing tube Sansui receivers from time to time and they appeared to be very nicely made and sounded good as well as being visually pleasing to the eyes.

I pretty much agree with your overall assessment of the gear you got. If you like the Sansui 500.....get a 1000. It's even better!
