Something Killed My Super Tweeters

Hey everyone. I rotated my 1980s Dali 8s in today to keep the juices flowing. I noticed the very top was missing so I pulled out my meter and both super Tweeters are open. When I bought these 4-5 years ago they were also dead. I found some Peerless that would work and fit the recess perfect. Putting a meter on the wires I get 5.3 ohm on the on. I can get the same speakers again but I don't want to put new ones in only to have them pop. Any thoughts?

No thoughts based on the limited info. But I see you mention an 85wpc Optonica and the speakers but I didn't see which exact speaker.

I'd fuse the speaker or at least the tweeter. Do you play music loud? Could be overdriving the amp and eating the tweets.

"1980s Dali 8s"? Since they're from the 80s, have they ever been recapped? Out of spec electrolytic caps often increase in value as they age, which would send a wider bandwidth signal to the tweeters. That could definitely burn them out. I'd do the repairs and recap at the same time.

Good luck.

Replace the single tweeters with a line array of 4 for each speaker wired in series/parallel to keep the load the same. That will give 6 db more head room. But I would replace the Tweeter caps for sure. You might up grade to a 3rd ordered filters for the tweeter in addition if not already.

Ok I'll try to answer everyone altogether. They're Dali 8, that's the model . Not model 8 just 8. Back then they weren't using elaborate model names. They are 5 driver, 4 way system with 2 8" woofers. I have no idea if the crossovers have ever been rebuilt but they have been refoamed. The brochure says there is like 20+ separate components. I don't play loud and use different receivers and amps. My bet was on the crossover cap but both ? But now that I think about it I have a 14 watt Realistic receiver in the loop right now and the specs list 20 watt minimum.

Recapping has become the standard answer for everything, these days.

"I got a flat tire on the way to the stereo shop today."

"Did you try recapping the tires?"

"No, but I will try that as soon as I get home!"

:D

Caps or clipping, take your pick. Well, what's you guess...?

There are a LOT of components in the crossover. Several electrolytics in stock form. Could be that some have aged out since the speakers' last rotation.

I wonder if drifting cap values might make the networks present a load that's a bit more reactive, or capacitive than the Optonica amp likes...
