Songs that trick you into thinking there's something wrong with your system

Neutral Milk Hotel ~Aeroplane o'er the Sea~ upon first listen had me thinking a tube was going bad. The genre of music is considered lo-fi and contains feedback in certain songs. Otherwise the album is awesome.

The vibrations of the saxophone reed in the early part of So What on Kind of Blue had me wondering if something was wrong.
You can also hear it in "Autumn Leaves." Cannonball's sax. Miles' trumpet has a touch of overtones, too. All part of the ambience!

Autumn Leaves.

I have The Who My Generation album on vinyl (original Decca US release).

Maybe the pressing machine was due for cleaning the day they made mine, but man that record sounds terrible.

I worked on big receiver and was testing it letting the multi disc CD player run. During a Metallica song, or at the end of the song, there was suddenly a hum like sound. I thought the receiver self destructed again.

After I realized it was in the song, I sighed in relief and went back to what I was doing.

I didn't think to note what song it was, because I was still recovering. : )

CD was Justice For All.

The Who. Won't Get Fooled Again. I bought the record new, bought the CD in the nineties, and U-Tube all have an eq. change just after 7:30 minute marker, after first couple of drum strikes following the solo, like the treble was turned up, mask removed from the audio. At first I thought my stereo, then the record and kind of forgot about it till I tried the CD. It is in the mix/mastering of the record and, if you listen through a certain perspective...it is an anthem... it is as thought the new generation lifts the veil and brings in the future without the old boss. What ever, it was on purpose somewhere along the line, you can't miss it.

Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - Metal Monster

Most folks know Arthur Brown as "The god of hellfire", but he formed another band called "Kingdom Come" (not to be confused with a later band by that name) after his Crazy World days, and produced some fairly odd music. From their 1971 debut album "Galactic Zoo Dossier" comes a track called "Metal Monster" which starts off (relatively) normal before the music starts stuttering like a defective CD, a good decade before that format hit the market. There's more oddness to the track (and album, and band), but I'll let you listen for yourself:

It happened to me once. Strangely, with a classical music CD, where such surprises aren't usually expected.
First symphony by Brahms, with John Eliot Gardiner and the Royal Concertgebouw, released in 2025.

In the final movement, in the horn solo that follows the introduction, there's a harsh, metallic sort of buzz at the end of each phrase. At first I thought it was distortion caused by something in my audio chain. Speaker going bad? Amp clipping? It scared me.
I ripped the CD and listened to the FLAC file on my computer, in headsets, and the buzz was still there.
I suspected a recording artefact (maybe a defective or poorly placed microphone?), or some resonance, but then someone on a classical music forum, who is also a brass player, said it must have sounded like that in the actual performance, possibly due to the horn player running a bit out of breath at the end of the long phrase.

Here it is. I used subtitles to mark the points I'm talking about.

But it did scare me when I first heard it.
It sounded so much like a problem with my equipment.

Temptations' "My Girl" has, at times, fuzzy drum lines. Overmodulated or badly placed mics, or both. Oddly, it's more apparent with the STEREO CD, than the original MONO LP.

Definitive Collection - The Temptations. Motown-UM. B0011662-02. 2008.

"Temptations Sing Smokey." Tamla/Motown TML 11016 . MONO. Gramophone LTD pressing (UK). 1965.

Hearing My Girl for the first time in 1965 on a Panasonic transistor radio while approaching Pearl Harbor on a troop ship was a magical experience I always remember…the song had great sound…the beauty of seeing Hawaii &hearing that song was wonderful… no distortion on that format ..,

Year Of The Cat - starts out all on the right, sounds like a channel died

Johnny Cash - Hurt- the vocals go into saturation in the middle of the song when it gets wound up so high that there is no more dynamic range and it sounds like a dying speaker.

Had an LP that played side one fine. Flipped it over to play side two and the stylus slid across every track to the end.

Thought there may be garf on the stylus but I check that every play. Watched it closely and once it hit the surface away it went. What's up with my turntable???

Couldn't figure out what the problem was until I looked closer at the groove. When the record was pressed side one pressed fine but side two didn't press completely. It looked fine but there wasn't enough groove wall to hold the stylus in place.

Will have to see if I still have it.

It's one of "those songs." I always think of one female when I hear it. That's best left for another thread.

When I bought my "Nazz Nazz album in 1969 while my friends and I were downtown, we stopped at my one friend's house on the way home to play it on their expensive console stereo (It was a Magnavox).

The second side starts with a song named "Hang On Paul". It was made so it sounds just like the turntable shuts down at the end before it goes into the next track, "Kiddie Boy" and that's exactly what we thought happened.

BTW, it REALLY sucks having to click on all the constant pop up ads to close them in time before they won't close anymore.

I bought a soundtrack of the movie, "The Big Chill" which has My Girl on it. I bought it at Goodwill and played it on the way home. Some of the CD sounded bad and when I got home played it on my home system and got the same results. It's a MOTOWN label and I thought they would have done better than that.

Yes. The engineers and producers had a bad day on such a historic song.

I have Motown-produced LPs from around the same time as "My Girl." The drum work is definitely clearer.

They Might Be Giants - Unpronounceable

Happens at about 2:10 then again at 3:10. First time I heard it I made a dive for the CD player because something was obviously amiss and glitching out! Turns out they worked very hard in the studio to create this abominable sequence of noises. They are odd. I can best describe them as negative sound. I love this song but man these sounds still put me on edge. I still eye my systems when these two parts of the song come up.
