Sonos Port. Any thoughts?

I recently picked up a free Onkyo TX-8050 with protection issues. (for another thread) The person threw in a Sonos Port as part of the package. I've never had a Sonos product, but I am looking for something to replace my aging Chromecast Audio.

I did a little reading about the Port, and I have some questions. Someone somewhere tested it, and supposedly it's not bit perfect. It seems like it resamples everything to 44.1kHz / 24 bit. I am looking for something that will faithfully play Amazon HD/Ultra. I also want something that can use native streaming platform apps.

Am I right in thinking that the Port can't do either of these things? If not, my thought is to sell it and my Topping D10 to fund a Wiim Mini and a DAC with optical input. (the D10 only had USB in)

I basically want something with all the functionality of the CCA, but with better sound.

Any thoughts or advice?

It is my understanding that you can use the Amazon app with the Port and get 24-bit resolution, but I think you're still limited to 48k sample rate. Many would argue the sample rate is more important than the bit depth.

Have you tried the Port to see if the Amazon app can be used to control it? Try it with and without the Topping DAC to see which you prefer.

I have an older Sonos Connect (the predecessor of the Port) that I currently use for background music and to sync with my Sonos wireless speakers. For critical listening, I use a Node with a Denafrips Ares II DAC. I did use the Sonos Connect with a Meridian DAC for many years (limited to 16/44) and it sounded very good. How important is hi-res vs 16/44 to you? You need to have a pretty resolving system, with properly placed speakers, to hear the difference. And even then, the differences are pretty subtle.

So I ended up selling the Port, and am selling the Topping d10 as well. I plan to get a Wiim and a DAC with toslink from the proceeds. Thinking maybe a Topping e30 or e50. I like the idea that the Wiim can be used with all the major streaming services through their respective apps. And it now supports Amazon HD/Ultra.

What DAC are you using with the WiiM?
