Sonus Faber Venere 1.5

Thanks again, all. By the end of last weekend I liked the SF's better. I'm listening to my C7's tonight. Before I get anything else I will be looking at a tube amp (would love an LM 518 to match the CD player).

For now I have to stop buying and hope that I don't have to sell. Surgery is 10/9/15 and I will be off work for a bit. I'm optimistic. A little while more in pain and then maybe the healing can start!

The C7's are sounding great tonight!

Hope you feel better Art.

I have the 1.5's and I really enjoy them fed by Classe amps, they are not the end all be all but for the $900 I paid shipped with stands I love them. The tweeter is surprisingly good IMO and bass may have slight bloat here and there but they play larger than they are, louder than you'd think and are pretty easy to mate with a sub.
On a side note I have Ankylosing Spondylitis (Mic Mars of Motley Crue has this too) so I know back problems all too well, I hope you find some relief. There isn't any for me but we deal the hand we are dealt.

Thank you all for the well wishes. I wish it were only a thrown out back...not so much. Broke my back in a car accident at age 21, I'm now 55. Several back injuries later...this one is more serious. At minimum I need an ACDF surgery covering at least 5-7 and it ain't a fun thought. The pain is 24/7 without relief. No sleep or fun...but and I do mean but...I have adjusted to a life with all out pain and will be OK. I'm smiling and listening to Traffic as I type. As for the SF 1.5's. Jury is out...as for now I would have to say that I don't much care for them...however that could be skewed by pain.

PS, I am not using any narcotic pain relievers...no judgement for those who do..but I am resisting at all costs. I have a full scrip in the medicine cabinet and have not used one. I would make too good a junkie...lol!

Sorry to hear...you might seriously want to check out the "natural pain killer" RGA mentioned...I know that may be a concern but I have had some personal dealings with the substance myself...my boy was born with spina bifida...as he grew and got older certain symptoms worsen...a few year ago he got into the natural...I was kinda concerned...on the fence about the use but he just turned 18...grade 12...gets 90's for grades (when he's not too lazy LOL)...and looking at pharmacy or possibly into business when he graduates...for him it's a tool to get the job done...not a crutch or an excuse...

On that note...I wish we had an SF dealer locally...we have Chario though and I really dig them!!!

This thread was temporarily set aside as I had a bit of a health issue. Wound up having spinal surgery on Oct 9th. Spending a couple (or 3) of weeks at home while mending before I return to work. Meanwhile the Venere 1.5's are still breaking in and I will have more to write later. Their sound stands in stark contrast to the wonderful KEF LS50's that occupied the same space in my room...however they really are growing on me.

Hey Art, thanks for the update. It sounds like you are doing better now? I hope? I kind of figured the Venere's would sound a bit darker than the LS50; them seem to have a more relaxed midrange. What do you think? Since I haven't heard them in the same room it's hard for me to fully trust my impressions.

Art,

Get well soon.

Did you ever listen to the LS50s with start to finish tube amplification?
I did this recently and I would say compared to decent solid state, the speakers sounded easily twice as good on a tube setup. Gone was the slightly closed sound, gone was the metallic aftertaste and instead was an open organic smooth resolution and clarity that put these babies at the top of the list.

The Venere 1.5 is much more forward sounding than the LS50. I'm sure that the LS50 is a technically superior transducer but the Venere 1.5 is no slouch. The SF's are more expressive and more fully fleshed out. They are excellent at reproducing the sound of a recording space, much as the LS50's are. The difference is between sitting in the first or second row with the Venere 1.5 as opposed to sitting further back with the LS50. Both speakers are excellent at giving an intimate portrait of the music. Tonality is better with the SF. Probably why the SF's are superior at allowing the listener to differentiate between instruments and hear them all simultaneously as a whole. It's easy to see why both speakers won product of the year awards, albeit the LS50's won with every publication that I know of.

You might be reviewing the ELACs next year!

oooh...I like the sound of that!! I really dig speakers that give me that first row impression :)

I'm interested in the instrument separation but not sure I want a speaker that's front row forward. I thought the LS50s were forward sounding. One of the Best Buy sells them so I may have to give them a listen.

They sound interesting. May have to give them a listen. Since we have the Brio-R that means it pushes them adequately and the synergy is good. I should be able get a good feel with a 60 day trial.
