Apologies in advance if this topic has been covered elsewhere on this site. Sometimes you need a diagnosis to even know which search terms to use, and I don't have one yet. I'm neither an audiophile nor an electrical engineer.
Just picked up the 6046A this week. I probably paid too much ($80), but the physical condition was too perfect to pass it up. Not a single scratch, smudge or fleck of dust to be found, inside or outside. Pretty amazing, given its age.
On the other hand, lots of snap, crackle, pop and channels fading in/out. Thanks to all the great advice here, I was able to clear that up pretty easily with Deoxit on the switches.
The only remaining problem I'm having now is an occasional high treble effect through one channel. Everything sounds pretty great for a few minutes, then the volume jumps about 25% and I get intense treble through just the right channel. It doesn't sound awful or necessarily "incorrect": The sound gets a lot brighter and more balanced sometimes, and other times it's just totally tinny.
FWIW, the sound out of this thing is pretty astonishing! I had been using a middle-of-the-line 2010ish Yamaha @ 75 wpc that sounds totally anemic next to the 6046A. I have a pair of B&W DM602 S2s that never really did much for me until this week, more than 10 years after I bought them. If you're considering this amp, don't hesitate! It's a jewel!
