Sony B*stards!

A buddy of mine is the buyer for a Home Theater / automation / security company and he can get just about anything. He was looking at B&K, Lexicon, etc. Instead of spending thousands of dollars, he bought a Pioneer AVR with pre-outs. Sounds great and only cost him $165.

WOW!

Definitely not a bad deal. VERY interesting. I wonder, does this unit have a master volume control? Does it have a remote control?

Volume control!!!

Did some more research! It has a volume control and a remote!

This is looking VERY good to me right now.

Yes and Yes. I started a thread about using this device almost 15 months ago...seemed to generate little interest.

The advantage of something like this is that it can be used to add DTS and DD 5.1 to our old vintage systems. Although many of the new DVD/CD players have DTS and DD outputs, it is esentially a fixed level and you need attentutors of some sort to control the volume. With the Klipsch device and proper wiring, you can listen to regular two-channel stereo just as you always have, and with the flip of a switch change the signal from your vintage setup to the DD decoder.

Geez! Wish I'd seen your suggestion BEFORE I wasted cash on two Sony Pre/Processors - both of which blew hard!

I wonder how good this one will be. The biggest problem I had before was excessive noise - I'm going to inquire to Klipsch about the S/N ratio.

What do you think this would do with a stereo PCM signal?

Stereo PCM can be decoded to vanilla Dolby Pro-Logic Surround.

I almost bought one of these...but with the price drop from $170 to $99, I may spring for one just to check it out.

Only problem (and it's not a huge one) is that it doesn't do Dolby Pro-Logic II.

I think it's a done deal...

The lack of DPL II doesn't affect me either. The only feature I'd like to see is a BYPASS, so that I don't have to switch my pre/main jumpers like you show in the diagram above.

I think I'm going to order one tomorrow. Their website doesn't support Canadian addresses so I can't get one tonight.

I do a similar thing using a Denon AVR, I use multiple amps (as in 4 amps but will actually use 6 when they are all done ;) ) and I use my Lux pre amp for music. It gets a little more complicated since the digital signal from my PC goes into the AVR via toslink and then out to my pre amp via the tape outs so I use rat shack selector switches on each channel to switch between music and HT. Meaning if I want the amps to receive the signal from the AVR or the signal from the pre.

I use these switches:

Does anyone have a picture of the back-panel of the Klipsch?

I see in the FAQ they mention you still need the 'control' tower that comes with the Klipsch speakers. That control tower attenuates volume if I remember correctly.

If this little beggar has dig in, and 5.1 preouts AND volume control - it may very well be the best kept secret in HT preamps.

I'm still skeptical.

Cheers,
Russ

To be sure go in the Klipsch forum and find someone who has one and ask them ;)

Be interesting to know, I could pick one up for my son's system.

It does have a master volume control!

I'm trying to order mine RIGHT NOW - I'm on hold - the receptionist has a great southern accent!

And in the text it says;

All functions are carried out with the remote. It might not look like much, and it feels a bit cheap, but it is smartly laid out and very comfortable. I prefer a larger volume control, but the central location puts it directly under your thumb.

Seems pretty clear to me :D

Yes, please give a quick overview of the unit when you receive it, as I could find a use for one at that price.

Arggg... They won't ship to Canada

If I can't find it locally I'm going to have to relay it through a friend in WA.

It certainly sounds too good to be true and you know what that usually means ;)

If it wasn't so close after xmas I would be one and give it a shot.
