Sony Betamax keeps ejecting tapes

Hi all, I recently got a Sony Betamax to play some old home movies on. The problem is that I'll put a tape in, and after 6-7 seconds the tape ejects again. I took the cover off, belt still intact. Actually looks pretty clean inside and out but it won't take the tape and hold it. Any ideas on how I can possibly fix it?

It's a SL-HF300 if it matters. Thanks

maybe the heads are stuck and the auto-eject is kicking the tape out?

my dad has this thing called the great time machine by quasar, made in the 70s, it it had a safety where if the motor started spinning the gears and they didnt roll, it would stop the tape because it thought it was jammed/molded/damaged etc.
that was the 70s though..but it could be related to you too. check to see if the wheels are turning when you push play

Didn't work on many Betamx machines but in VHS decks there was an infrared emitter/detector that monitored the tape up reel; if you looked under the reel, the underside had small reflective strips on it. As the take up reel turned, the detector put out pulses that went to a watchdog timer. If the timer didn't get any pulses for around 5 seconds, the machine went to stop and then ejected the tape. Sounds like what is going on here.
