Sony CD-31 Not Loading CDs, Making Noise

Hello forum! I'm trying to repair my mother's 1987 Sony CDP-31. It was working fine until recently when the CD tray started acting funny. At first I assumed it was the CD tray belt and I replaced that. The tray moves smoothly, but once the CD tray goes back in, the spindle arm tries to lower and it makes this noise like something's stuck. I checked all the plastic gears and they seem to look fine and have all their teeth. Does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong with it? So after replacing the belt, tearing down the CD tray assembly and re-greasing the gears the tray moves smoothly but the CD still won't play. It starts playing when I apply some pressure to the spindle arm so I'm thinking maybe something is preventing it from fully clamping down on the CD?
