Got a Sony CDP-302ES on craigslist. It worked at the sellers, but no go when I got it home. I tried three CDs. Two it won't even read. One it reads the number of tracks and time, but just continues to spin when I press play.

I found a three-year-old thread here, opened it and lubricated the tray transport and the rails the laser mechanism travels on.

When I looked at it from the bottom with a CD inserted, the laser mechanism only travels about a half-inch on its rails. I can move it by hand easily.

All belts appear to be present, and there doesn't appear to be lots of gunk on the gears.

Appreciate any help anyone can offer. It came with the original box and remote, but if there's not an easy fix, not sure I want to pay someone to get it working.

I had an issue like that with a CDP.I kept moving the laser sled back and forth by hand, eventually it was able to work. I think the gunky stuff on the rails impedes the sled.By moving it back and forth you are getting the grease you applied into the rails. good luck Alan

Nice picture.. You could sharpen that just a tad, on my Hd toshiba screen I was able to get that pic to 300% max. wearing reading glasses and I could read the bottom board. Nice example considering the b/w pics we see on many Sm's.

Left of the bottom board in view What is that plastic tab leaning over agains the white grommet? not completely familiar with this unit but chassis looks familiar like an end of travel switch.

The CD player's in my office. I'll take a look tomorrow.

The arrowed bars are part of the tray mechanism. The tray is driven by the belts at the rear of the assembly. If the eject is lazy or slow, the belts are slipping and in need of replacement. Not a difficult job.

The linear motor could be fouled with dirt. Make sure it is clean and traverses without binding. Also, clean the laser lens. I use water free rubbing alcohol although I have read this is not the best idea. You should research that one.

Anyways, I have a 520ES which is similar. It sounds great with the matching TA-F444ESII integrated amp. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the response! However, I don't think those bars are part of the tray mechanism. The picture was shot from the bottom of the unit. The unit ejects and loads fine. Pretty sure those bars are what the laser mechanism (not sure if that's the right term) travels on.

Will look for the linear motor--I'm an old guy who came back to hi-fi late in life, but with limited skills--to see what I can suss out.

Thanks again. I've read great things about this player, and I'd like to hear how it sounds.

The player is built like a tank - just about everything on it is made of metal. Sound wise, it is very good, but nothing extraordinary.

I would clean the laser rails with some pure alcohol, then apply a very light lubricant to them (you don't want them to gum up).

Thanks. I did try that. Any other ideas? I can move the laser mechanism manually, but it only moves about a quarter inch when I turn the player on.
