I put a bid in on one of these, the balanced outs did it for me but also the lampizator guy gave this a thumbs up as one of the best vintage cdp's out there. Now I'm reading I might not be able to replace the laser when it goes bad? I did not read about the laser on Lampizator. what do you guys think of this cdp? Is it possible to keep it functioning for the foreseeable future? It allegedly works now.

It is very good, no doubt.

The X77 is the only Sony using the KSS-280A so no 'lesser' model to butcher for a working optical unit. The only other player that I know of that may use the same PU is the Accuphase DP70(V), and I don't think that makes sense as a donor.

However.. and I'm far from certain.. the KSS-190A might work but I'd have to research it further to confirm it. Try this and filter on KSS-190 - tough choice!

I believe the laser assembly rides on magnets, which is pretty freaking cool. I believe the X7 also had this assembly. Cool unit, totally lined in copper on the inside with a transformer the size of a small house....LOL. Good luck, hope you win!

Bought one off the bay about 8yrs ago. Has worked fine ever since. Yes, one day the laser will stop and it will be a boat anchor. Until then I'm going to enjoy it. Very nice piece of gear. Weighs as much as some receivers!

I won it, Not shipped yet. I've been using a Sony bdp x 800 blue ray player and it doesn't sound to good, it's great for movies but I've been trying it out with over 500 cd's a guy gave me. My server was down so I couldn't stream got that fixed and now my dacs usb doesn't seem to be working, the coax does, I'm using that. It doesn't sound anywhere as good as my streamer did.

If it weighs 46 pounds I'm gonna be spending a lot on shipping!
