Ive been reading various ways of fixing dim VFDs from variable power supplies, to bad caps, to bad power circuits but im still a bit stumped. It seems like the display would need 30V or more ideally. This sony receiver I have is less than 8 years old and has as much worse VFD display than my sony str-DE595 from 2003 which shines bright as ever.
Here's what I have so far:
ND100 VFD:
pin 40 reads 29.2V when i believe it should be 30V
pin 1-2 and 49-50 both read 6.6V
Diodes D101-D102: both work fine in both sequences. ~.7V driop via MM diode test
C103, 106, 109, 127 have been replaced with no change
IC103:
pin 1 & 2 I get 6.15v instead of 6.3v
pin 4 i get 5v as expected
pin 5 I get 1v instead of 1.5v
I dont have access to a variable power supply which seem to run $60+ for a 30V unit. I paid about $175 for the unit and they go for about $150 no so worse case I resell the unit to someone who doesnt mind the dim and buy a different model.
