Sony MXD-D1 spindle starting and stopping constantly

I recently bought an old Sony MXD-D1 CD/Minidisc player but there's some problems with the spindle motor either skipping or starting and stopping constantly.

What happens is: when the disc goes in, it starts up and reads the disc information, but when I press play, it plays for a second, stops, plays another second, stops and so on.

I've cleaned the laser lens and all the lens gears seem to be pretty well lubricated still. Is the problem the spindle motor? Is it failing? Or is this a laser calibration issue?

Here's a video of it.

Looks like you have a bad laser. Enough output to get focus lock but not enough to read data, so the disc motor can't lock speed. There are no adjustments. It uses a KSS213. Any suffix letter should work; B,C, etc. Liberty Electronics on Ebay has good parts. Don't buy it from anyone else, you could get a junk part. Wear a grounded anti static wrist strap when installing the laser.

Damn, really was hoping to not have to replace it. Oh well, there's reputable stores selling that laser in my country so I'll give it a shot. Thank you
