Sony passive radiator speaker system?

PROJECT 2501

I'm well aware of what a passive radiator is and I'm fairly competent in knowing how they work or so I thought. These stand alone passive radiator speakers from Sony just make no sense to me according to my own understanding of how a passive radiator operates and I can't even guess as to how these would be able to work at all..

In each of those cabinets, one speaker has to be active and the other not active meaning the active one has a working voice coil with connections to the amplifier while the inactive has no voice coil or no magnet and no connection to an amplifier.

In an inclosed space, the active speaker makes the non active speaker move therefore producing more bass than just a single active driver.

Personally and this is just me, but in a two speaker speaker cabinet, I prefer that they are both active and both together are producing more power and bass.

Not sure what pictures you are looking at but the wires are clearly visible in the photos.

Passive Radiators are an effective way to increase the bass output. They are a compromise between the faster/more accurate bass from a sealed/acoustic suspension enclosure while extending the bass output similar to a ported/bass reflex enclosure.

Those look like a pair of speakers from a "package" such as a mini system or all in one. Probably listenable but far from high fidelity.

I'm a dummy, I thought that was a picture hanging type wire, I thought for hanging the speaker.
On my PC (as opposed to the phone) I can see that they are audio wires, not a wire to hang the speaker.

LoL.. that's exactly what I thought it was too and is the reason for me making this post. I thought it was hanging wire and I couldnt figure out how sound would come out of them ..
I'm glad I'm not the only one.

By "port" did you mean the small round thing between the two bigger drivers?
Looks to me like it might be a tiny tweeter.

If it has a passive radiator there won't be a port. Personally I prefer a passive radiator to a port. Both have there pros and cons, but passive radiators produce a more contred low end. Usually, but not always the passive will be larger than the woofer. I have a pair of Polk speakers with two 6" midbass drivers and a larger passive. The low end is pretty well controlled and dips down into the upper 20hz range. None of my ported speakers will go that low. I have a subwoofer, but it's just not needed with the Polk's. Where a ported speaker can sound kind of boomy with looser bass, a passive tends to have a tighter bass with better impact.

I will never try to decipher a picture without my glasses again (plus the eye doc says I have a cataract that needs attention).
It's hell getting old.

Tell me about it. You can't trust your eyes. I can't always trust my mind.

You are correct that these speakers came from a ’mini system’. My parents were the winners of a Sony system from a local Ottawa, Canada stereo shop called ‘Wakid Radio’ I think. They had purchased a stereo for my older brother’s high school graduation and got their name in the draw. We were driving to our cottage when we heard our name called over the radio station! The Sony system remained in my bedroom for a year maybe… it was about 1981. The system was a single unit that was wide and quite flat. A turntable under a black hinged lid and on the left you could shove in an 8 track. I remember the green-lighted radio dial. I was only 12 or so. It was magical. ‍♂️

After hearing speakers that are critically damped in sealed boxes and a few Paneled speakers that reach to 30 HZ for many many years I will say I can't get thrilled with speakers with ports, labyrinths.horn loaded, or passive radiators. I will say a B&O 5700 for the time was sort of acceptable. But after hearing ML and XR series speakers and then the later speakers from Magico, JBL and a few others using damped woofers are much superior than other types in other types of opened enclosures. Yes it takes more power and the over all out puts fall short of horn loaded speakers. But they don't ring and hang over or boom as other speaker systems. Even after you voice speakers or place them very carefully that undefined sort of mushy sound still presents itself. Especially with transient bass as opposed to lingering bass sound. You can easily recognize deep bass individual vibrations from double bass violins played with a bow, you hear the correct Tympani sound which is tight and fast. I sat in front of tympani's in symphonic bands and orchestras and I know they sound like. Bass quitar and individual note sounds from contra bass clarinet and contra bass clarinet are produced correctly when listening to damped woofers in sealed boxes. Some thing that just is never right with other attempts to get low extended bass. Even my infinite baffle speakers that are well stuffed and bi-amped just don't have the definition of sealed boxes with advanced woofer designs.

Like I say a passive radiator can be acceptable and enjoyable, but .
